Early in my career, I thought good engineers wrote more code. Elegant abstractions. Flexible frameworks, SOLID principles taken to a totalitarian extreme. Now we’re in the vibe coding era. Copilot autocompletes functions. ChatGPT scaffolds services. Claude can one-shot startups. Code generation costs nothing!! But every line—whether you wrote it or AI did—is still a liability: ∙ Needs testing ∙ Needs maintenance ∙ Needs someone to understand it when it breaks (usually at 2.37am) The best engineers I work with now? They delete AI suggestions more than they accept them. Because the real skill isn’t writing code faster. It’s the discipline to ask “do we actually need this?” 90% of software engineering has always been knowing what not to write. AI just made that 95%. More on this 👇

So now you're 42. Senior Manager. Principal Engineer. Solution Architect. 18 years in. Answering Slack at 11pm. Fixing other people's emergencies because you were raised not to drop things. Skipping the gym, the doctor, your kid's thing. Because that's what commitment looks like. That's what you were taught. And here's what you got for it. The same salary band for three years. A "you're really valued" at EOFY. A quiet feeling that if you stopped carrying it, everything would fall apart. Here's what nobody told us: The loyalty that kept our parents safe in survival mode is the exact thing keeping us stuck in growth mode. The people above you aren't working harder. They stopped absorbing everything. They started deciding what mattered. Availability is not seniority. Reliability is not leadership. That family holiday everyone keeps asking about. That’s why "career insurance" matters. Not later. Now. Here’s what doesn’t protect you: ❌ Working the hardest ❌ Being loyal and hoping it pays off ❌ Fixing everything quietly ❌ Being known only inside one team ❌ More certs when the real issue is “no one knows you” ❌ Waiting for job ads (many senior roles never get posted) ❌ “I’ll deal with it after this project” That’s not insurance. They’re solid.” That’s what creates interviews without applying. Quick self-check: If you got a restructure email tomorrow… Do you have 3 people who could open doors in 7 days? I’m not “disrupting.” I’m integrating. I’m not “moving fast and breaking things.” I’m moving thoughtfully and building value. That health has to take a back seat if you want to focus on your career. Health is the foundation of everything. It gives you the energy to succeed long term, to play with your kids, and to walk your daughter down the aisle one day. Success isn’t a sprint. It’s consistent effort over years. And if your health breaks down, none of it matters. A guy once came into our Muay Thai gym. He had been a rugby player in his younger years but had let himself go due to work. He was successful, had money, and wanted to turn his life around. He trained hard, got medical support, and was dedicated. Then one day he stopped showing up. Weeks later, we learned he had passed away. He was in his thirties. That’s the reality: when your health is gone, it’s very hard to get it back. People say they don’t have time. But a 30 minute home workout per day can help you live longer. We can use meal prep services if cooking feels impossible. Small changes fuel more energy, more focus, and better performance. Debugging Mindset: Think Like a Bug Hunter 🔍 Key lessons we all learn the hard way: 1. “Works in DEV” doesn’t mean “Works in PRD” 2. Small data hides big design flaws 3. Uninitialized variables are silent time bombs 4. FOR ALL ENTRIES: hero in dev, villain in PRD if not handled properly 5. Update task debugging reveals what normal debugging hides 6. A short dump is not the problem - it’s only the messenger Real skill is not just writing code - it’s questioning assumptions, reading between lines, and testing beyond the happy path. Finding the bug is half the battle; understanding why it was there wins the war.

Claude code spent 3+ hours fixing one bug. The actual fix took 10 minutes. Here’s what happened. I asked Claude Code to fix a bug that looked fairly simple. But something unexpected happened. Claude got stuck in a loop. Fix one thing → another issue appears. Fix that → something else breaks. Patch that → a new problem shows up. The cycle kept repeating. Claude kept trying for more than 3 hours… and eventually exhausted the rate limit. At that point I stepped in and reviewed the logic myself. Found the issue. Fixed in 10 minutes. What surprised me wasn’t the bug. It was watching an AI confidently go in circles for hours. A good reminder for me today: AI can speed up development a lot. But debugging still needs human intuition and stepping back to think. Curious if other developers have seen this. I’ve been trying out Uno Platform (https://platform.uno/) recently, and it reminded me how Microsoft’s cross-platform journey has evolved. Xamarin was already enabling cross-platform mobile development. When Microsoft acquired it, they brought it into the .NET ecosystem, bundled it with Visual Studio, and made C# a first-class way to build iOS/Android apps, a strategic shift that opened up mobile to many .NET teams. Fast forward to today, and Uno feels like the next chapter: Instead of targeting mobile only, it lets you use one C# + XAML codebase for mobile, desktop, and web (WebAssembly). Where Uno stands out for me: • Broad platform reach with mobile, Windows, macOS, Linux, web (WebAssembly) • Deep .NET integration leveraging existing skills and tooling • AI-powered productivity features like Hot Design and AI-assisted tooling that help you visualize and iterate UI faster without losing context The AI capabilities are notable, they don’t just speed up compilation or reloads, they actively help you design and understand UI changes as you build. Why do so many Senior Engineers hit a salary ceiling at [₹30-40 LPA / $160k]? You get promoted rapidly from Junior → Mid → Senior. Then... you stick. You work harder. You learn Rust. You learn GenAI. But the salary doesn't jump anymore. Here is the harsh truth: You cannot code your way past the Senior ceiling. • Juniors get paid to Learn. • Seniors get paid to Do. • Staff/Principals get paid to Multiply. If you write amazing code, you are a "1x" asset. If you design an architecture that lets 5 other engineers write amazing code, you are a "5x" asset. The jump to the next tax bracket isn't about "Learning a new Tool." It is about "Unblocking the Team." Stop asking: "𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥?" Here’s what truly helps you crack them: 1️⃣ Start with the Problem, Not the Solution Most candidates jump into microservices, Kubernetes, or Kafka. Great architects first clarify the business problem, constraints, SLAs, scale, and users. 2️⃣ Explain Your Thought Process Clearly Interviewers check your reasoning, not buzzwords. Talk about: Why this design? What alternatives you considered? Some systems fail loudly. Most fail quietly. And quiet failure is the kind that reaches customers before it reaches you. I once worked on a financial platform that looked flawless in every architecture review. Clean diagrams. Modern patterns. Strong optimism. Then real volume arrived. Pricing updates landed by the tens of thousands. Billing surged. Statement generation began slipping behind schedule. On one Friday evening, support tickets started rising faster than we could read them. And the system told us nothing. No warning about backlog. No signal of lag. No insight into where pressure was building. We were not scaling badly. We were scaling blindly. Have you ever been in a system where the problems appear long before the signals do? That was the moment we realised this was not a performance issue. It was a feedback issue.
