Gopi Kishan Mariyala liked thisAI can now write 1000 lines of code in seconds. Which makes knowing what NOT to write more critical than ever. Early in my career, I thought good engineers wrote more code. Elegant abstractions. Flexible frameworks, SOLID principles taken to a totalitarian extreme. Now we’re in the vibe coding era. Copilot autocompletes functions. ChatGPT scaffolds services. Claude can one-shot startups. Code generation costs nothing!! But every line—whether you wrote it or AI did—is still a liability: ∙ Needs testing ∙ Needs maintenance ∙ Needs someone to understand it when it breaks (usually at 2.37am) The best engineers I work with now? They delete AI suggestions more than they accept them. Because the real skill isn’t writing code faster. It’s the discipline to ask “do we actually need this?” 90% of software engineering has always been knowing what not to write. AI just made that 95%. More on this 👇

Especially for those of us raised to believe the opposite. Work hard. Stay humble. Don't complain. Be grateful you have the opportunity. Our parents didn't build their lives in a new country by saying no. They survived by being indispensable. And we watched that. We learned it. We wore it like armour into every job we ever had. So now you're 42. Senior Manager. Principal Engineer. Solution Architect. 18 years in. Answering Slack at 11pm. Fixing other people's emergencies because you were raised not to drop things. Skipping the gym, the doctor, your kid's thing. Because that's what commitment looks like. That's what you were taught. And here's what you got for it. The same salary band for three years. A "you're really valued" at EOFY. A quiet feeling that if you stopped carrying it, everything would fall apart. Here's what nobody told us: The loyalty that kept our parents safe in survival mode is the exact thing keeping us stuck in growth mode. The people above you aren't working harder. They stopped absorbing everything. They started deciding what mattered. Availability is not seniority. Reliability is not leadership. The market doesn't pay $300K for the person who never drops the ball. It pays $300K for the person who decides which balls matter. You don't have a work ethic problem. In the way budgets suddenly tighten. And that’s when it gets real. Because it’s not just your job. You start doing the math: Mortgage. School fees. Parents who need help. That family holiday everyone keeps asking about. That’s why "career insurance" matters. Not later. Now. Here’s what doesn’t protect you: ❌ Working the hardest ❌ Being loyal and hoping it pays off ❌ Fixing everything quietly ❌ Being known only inside one team ❌ More certs when the real issue is “no one knows you” ❌ Waiting for job ads (many senior roles never get posted) ❌ “I’ll deal with it after this project” That’s not insurance. That’s being one restructure away from panic. Because when the org chart changes… Hard work isn’t what saves you. Being known does. Here’s what actually protects you: ✅ Get known outside your team One skip-level chat a month. One coffee with a peer in another division. So your name exists beyond one manager. ✅ Be remembered for one expensive problem Not “cloud guy.” More like: “I prevent cloud migrations turning into security and cost disasters.” ✅ Collect proof that travels Not tasks. Wins. Before/after. Numbers. Risk reduced. So your value is obvious in 10 seconds. ✅ Build 3 door-openers People who can say: “Talk to them. They’re solid.” That’s what creates interviews without applying. Quick self-check: If you got a restructure email tomorrow… Do you have 3 people who could open doors in 7 days? Fewer roles. Higher bars. Sharper interviews. The engineers who still get hired or promoted, all share one thing in common: they have actually broken & fixed real systems. If you want an edge at work & across the interview table - go back to hands-on. That’s why site like sadservers. com matter, a seriously underrated gem for DevOps & SRE folks. It’s like “LeetCode for Linux”, but instead of coding challenges you get a remote Linux server with a real-world problem to solve, scenarios ranging from easy to hard. You debug & fix it just as you would in production, basically no fake labs, no pre-scripted hints. It’s one of the most practical ways to stay hands-on, sharpen your troubleshooting instincts & prepare for both interviews & on-call scenarios. And it’s the greatest advantage I have. In a world obsessed with 25-year-old tech founders, being an experienced woman in infrastructure and AI means you’re often overlooked. But here’s the truth: invisibility isn't a curse. It’s freedom. It means I’m not chasing the spotlight. I’m doing the work. I’m in the boardroom, not just on the stage. I’m not “disrupting.” I’m integrating. I’m not “moving fast and breaking things.” I’m moving thoughtfully and building value. At Marsham Edge, we help legacy projects and massive infrastructure systems embrace AI. Not by tearing them apart, but by helping them evolve. These organisations don’t need chaos. They need a steady hand, experience, and calm confidence. And honestly? I’ve never had so much fun. (And I can still give the 20-somethings a run for their money.) That health has to take a back seat if you want to focus on your career. Health is the foundation of everything. It gives you the energy to succeed long term, to play with your kids, and to walk your daughter down the aisle one day. Success isn’t a sprint. It’s consistent effort over years. And if your health breaks down, none of it matters. A guy once came into our Muay Thai gym. He had been a rugby player in his younger years but had let himself go due to work. He was successful, had money, and wanted to turn his life around. He trained hard, got medical support, and was dedicated. Then one day he stopped showing up. Weeks later, we learned he had passed away. He was in his thirties. That’s the reality: when your health is gone, it’s very hard to get it back. People say they don’t have time. But a 30 minute home workout per day can help you live longer. We can use meal prep services if cooking feels impossible. Small changes fuel more energy, more focus, and better performance. Your health isn’t separate from your success. It’s the base that makes it possible. #Longevity #Success #HealthIsWealth
