Formula 1 contributes £12bn to the UK economy every year, supporting thousands of jobs. The UK motorsport industry as a whole has a £16bn annual turnover, with spillover beyond sport into tech, skill, R&D and supply chains. Yesterday, business and trade secretary Peter Kyle was welcomed to Silverstone to meet with Formula 1 representatives and some of the Aston Martin F1 Team, which employs 1,100 staff at its state-of-the-art £200m Silverstone factory. From a circuit on the track in the safe hands of Jessica Hawkins, to an exciting pit-stop challenge, the Secretary of State was able to see a small snippet of this thriving industry first-hand, while celebrating a sector at the heart of the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy.

It was a pleasure to meet the UK Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle alongside colleagues from Aston Martin F1 Team and Silverstone yesterday. The Secretary of State had the opportunity to see firsthand the work that goes on at one of our most iconic circuits and meet the next generation of engineers who are building the future of our sport during a tour of the AMR Technology Campus. Ten of the 11 Formula 1 teams have bases in the UK - supporting over 40,000 jobs, 25,000 high skilled engineers and contributing more than £12 billion to the economy each year. Commenting on the visit, Formula 1 President & Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali, said: “The UK is the home of Formula 1. From hosting the world’s first Grand Prix in 1950 to today - when 10 of the 11 teams are headquartered or have significant bases here - the UK sits at the heart of a thriving global industry. Formula 1 delivers billions of pounds to the UK economy and showcases advanced British manufacturing on the world stage. It was a pleasure to meet the Secretary of State at Aston Martin’s exceptional factory to discuss how we can continue working together to grow the sport and expand its impact in the UK and around the world.” Business Secretary Peter Kyle said: “Formula 1 is a true British success story which generates billions for our economy and supports thousands of high-skilled, high-paid jobs across the country, from engineering to aerospace. It was fantastic to see the British innovation, expertise and passion on show at Silverstone and Aston Martin. Through our Modern Industrial Strategy, this government is driving growth in the industry to keep it on track for success in the long term.” Department for Business and Trade
