If your salary hasn't moved in three years, you've already taken a pay cut. That's not a hot take. That's math. From 2021 to 2025, consumer prices rose nearly 23%. Average wages over the same period grew about 22%. Even people who got annual raises often didn't keep pace with what inflation took out the other side. If your salary has been flat, the gap is worse. Here's what that means in practice: the same paycheck that covered your rent, groceries, and expenses in 2021 covers less today. You are doing the same job for less real money. The conversation worth having with your employer is not "can I have a raise." It's "my compensation hasn't kept up with the cost of doing the job." That's a different framing and it lands differently. If you've had that conversation and it went nowhere, it might be time to find out what the market is actually paying for your skills right now.
