𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 "I'll never forget the moment I realized I didn't know what I didn't know." It was 2 AM at my first hackathon in college. My team was struggling to integrate our backend, hitting error after error. That's when it hit me – this wasn't like any classroom assignment I'd ever done. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 In university, we build projects with clean datasets and plenty of time. Hackathons throw you into the real world with a problem, 48 hours, and a ticking clock. Here's what I didn't expect: The coding was only 30% of the challenge. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-Solving Under Pressure When your API breaks at 3 AM and submission is in 5 hours, you learn to debug faster than ever. You stop being precious about "perfect" code and focus on solutions that work. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 This wasn't about dividing tasks and hoping everyone delivers. We collaborated in real-time, made quick decisions, and adapted when our plan fell apart. I learned more about version control and team dynamics in 48 hours than in entire semesters. 𝗣𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 You don't just submit code – you present to judges who ask tough questions. Can you explain complex concepts simply? These are skills every developer needs. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 Research shows 70% of hackathon participants build networks that lead to job opportunities. But it goes deeper – you develop speed of learning, adaptability, and the confidence to tackle problems you've never seen before. My biggest takeaway: That first hackathon taught me imposter syndrome is just proof you're stepping into new territory. I didn't win. Our project barely worked. But I walked out with something more valuable: the confidence to tackle unknown problems. Three years later, facing complex cloud challenges in my first job, I drew on that experience. The best way to learn programming isn’t through tutorials — it’s by building a startup. 💡 Here’s why 👇 The worst-case scenario is you walk away with new skills — a language, a framework, or a tech stack. The best-case scenario? The startup you built to learn those tools ends up becoming your first exit. Either way, you win. I say this from experience. Before selling my most recent #startup, I had built several others. My first one was during undergrad — a platform called Vidy App, designed to help college students find barbers near campus and feel confident through peer reviews. I took that project to a campus startup competition and placed third. 🥉 Not first, but as a solo #founder, that validation gave me the confidence to keep going. Building that app forced me to spend hours outside of class learning how to code, debug, and deploy. I didn’t just build a product — I built a skill set. That experience opened doors to internships, mentorships, and a clear sense of belonging in the #techcommunity. Fast forward a decade later — my approach hasn’t changed. Whenever I want to learn something new, I #build around it. A new tool? A new framework? I’ll turn it into a product idea. That mindset didn’t just help me learn faster — it eventually led to an acquisition. 🚀 Whether you’re a junior developer just starting out or a staff engineer looking to grow — don’t wait for the perfect course, project, or certification. Lessons in Planning, Partnership, and Purpose One of my most insightful experiences this year came from being part of the operations team for the upcoming Tech Bootcamp, which was initially slated for August 2025 but has now been rescheduled for 2026. The program was designed to train 200 teenagers in tech skills, and we began early planning with a clear vision in mind. Using Notion, we managed tasks, tracked deliverables, and assigned responsibilities across team leads — an excellent opportunity for me to gain hands-on experience with structured project management tools. Along the line, we faced a major challenge with fundraising, as the project required significant financial resources. But instead of giving up, we decided to pivot — and just as we did, a new opportunity opened up. An organization focused on tech education for children and teenagers reached out to us for a partnership, allowing us to gain practical experience and insights we could apply to our main Bootcamp next year. This journey has reminded me that delays aren’t denials — they’re often redirections for growth. Through this experience, we’ve refined our goals, strengthened our teamwork, and deepened our understanding of what it takes to bring a vision to life.
