Help make WordPress.tv videos accessible to a wider audience by adding captions or translating existing subtitles. You’ll pick a video, caption it using Amara.org, and submit it for review.
Before you start
Complete the common setup first, then:
- Setup: Create a free account on Amara.org.
- Read: Read through the captioning guide on WordPress.tv — this covers the full process from start to finish.
- Connect: Join #wptv on SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ and introduce yourself.
Steps
- Find a video that needs captions. Browse WordPress.tv and look for videos that show “Subtitle this video ” in the sidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme. under Subtitles. Latest videos are a good place to start.
- Caption the video by following the captioning guide. The guide walks through using Amara.org to add captions or translate existing subtitles.
- Upload your caption file to the video’s page on WordPress.tv by clicking “Subtitle this video” in the sidebar. The captioning guide covers this step in detail.
- Post in #wptv that you’ve submitted captions, including a link to the video. This helps moderators find your submission and lets you get feedback if anything needs fixing — especially encoding issues that can occur with non-English subtitles.
Contribution checklist
- Captions or translation completed and uploaded to the video’s WordPress.tv page
- Posted in #wptv with a link to the video
What happens next
A moderator will review your captions. If there’s no response after 2–3 weeks, ask in #wptv.
When you’re ready, pick another video — there are always more that need captions.
