Preparedness starts with knowing who is on the move and what they need. This year, IOM Lithuania took part in “Vyčio skliautas 2026”, Lithuania’s largest national preparedness and crisis management exercise. Every child deserves a place where they can learn, grow and feel they belong. This summer, IOM partnered with IKEA Polaska to help create a more welcoming environment for around 60 children with disabilities from Poland and Ukraine at the Extraordinary School in Józefów to support their learning and independence. IKEA donated nearly 300 items for classrooms and shared areas, while IOM team helped assemble the furniture and prepare the classrooms. IOM - UN Migration | IOM Poland

What will keep Schengen strong for the next 40 years? 🇪🇺 The world’s largest free movement area turned 40 last year. On 14 October, 116 participants met in Vienna at the European Migration Network Austria National Conference to help write its next chapter. Speakers discussed solidarity, border management, and partnerships with countries of origin and transit. Winter is approaching in Ukraine, where damaged homes, attacks on energy infrastructure and unaffordable heating costs risk forcing families to leave again. Electricity, heating and water systems are under growing pressure, while continued attacks are making everyday life increasingly dangerous for communities across the country. Meanwhile, an estimated 1.4 to 1.5 million returnees are living in frontline districts, and for 2.1 million internally displaced people, returning home remains impossible because their homes are damaged, destroyed or in an unknown condition. At today's UN briefing in Geneva, IOM called for urgent support to repair damaged homes, improve insulation and maintain essential services.

Ukrainians who returned home after fleeing war risk being displaced again this winter. Latest IOM findings show recent returnees are likely to consider leaving again, as damaged housing, attacks on energy infrastructure and rising heating costs make it harder for families to stay. Less than 7 per cent of IOM's Ukraine Crisis Response Plan for 2026 has been funded. Urgent support is needed to help communities withstand the months ahead. Read more: https://lnkd.in/geyuj79Q

🏠 A roof, A school, A future. After fleeing the war in Ukraine, Alona and her family found safety in Scotland, with their children settling into local schools. But when the children’s visas expired during delays, that new stability was suddenly at risk. Referred by Argyll and Bute Council, IOM caseworkers guided the family through the Ukraine Permission Extension process. “It would be very difficult without this support, especially for a family with children,” Alona says.
