40 years of KAMS! On Friday 9 October, we came together in Broome to celebrate four decades of Aboriginal leadership, community control, and working together for Kimberley Aboriginal people. From our beginnings as a cooperative between two Aboriginal health services in 1986, KAMS has grown alongside our Member Services and communities. We remain an organisation of Aboriginal people, for Aboriginal people, controlled by Aboriginal people. Our vision remains: “All Kimberley Aboriginal people are empowered to be strong, healthy and connected through Aboriginal community-controlled services”. Thank you to our founders, Elders, Aboriginal Health Workers, past and present directors and staff, Member Services, and partners who have built and sustained KAMS. We also remember those who are no longer with us, whose contributions remain part of our story. Together, we celebrate 40 years and look ahead to the next chapter. We would like to share another wonderful outcome of our partnership with Thread Together who kindly donated beautiful brand-new towels to the Ardyaloon community. Here is a photo of Elder Maureen Davey alongside their wonderful HaCC staff Rose, Cheryl, and Shania, proudly receiving one of the items. They are distributing the remaining towels to other Elders and clients as they visit the centre over the coming days. Please let this remind you of the open and continuous offer from the organisation Thread Together in donating brand new clothes and items to communities who will benefit from them, whether it be for an individual for an occasion, or a large group of people; sports teams, community members, staff, and family. No request seems to be too big or too small for the generous team from Thread Together who curate bespoke packages for unique needs. WA's Energy Ahead program has won the Energy Efficiency Council (ECC) Inclusion Champion of the Year award at the 2026 ECC National Conference Gala Dinner last month. The Energy Ahead program, available for eligible Synergy and Horizon Power residential customers, aims to empower households to take control of their energy use and reduce bills through free energy coaching, audits and workshops designed to improve energy literacy and home energy efficiency. Energy Ahead is delivered through Energy Policy WA in partnership with Horizon Power, Nirrumbuk Environmental Health and Services (NEHS), Synergy (Electricity Generation and Retail Corporation) and the Financial Wellbeing Collective.

🔬A major milestone for WA research and innovation🔬 Today, we announced the inaugural recipient of the FHRI Fund Spotlight Program, focused on Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). Congratulations to Professor Jonathan Carapetis AM and the END RHD WA team, who have been awarded the Spotlight to help drive a coordinated, State-wide response to this preventable but devastating condition. Led through a powerful partnership between the Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia, WA Country Health Service, The Kids Research Institute Australia, and The University of Western Australia, the initiative brings together researchers, clinicians and communities to deliver meaningful, long-term impact. The Spotlight Program is a flagship initiative of the FHRI Fund Strategy 2025–30, targeting key health challenges unique to Western Australia through collaborative, system-wide action. The ongoing diphtheria outbreak in the Kimberley, Pilbara, and Goldfields is a direct consequence of long-term under-investment in the environmental determinants of health, and governments must urgently invest more in Aboriginal environmental health initiatives. The Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia is expressing urgent concern regarding the resurgence of this potentially fatal disease—which had not been seen in regional WA for over half a century—and is disproportionately impacting Aboriginal people.
