AI coverage doesn’t need more hype! For journalists, covering AI should mean more than reporting the latest model, chatbot or product announcement. Instead, thorough AI reporting must leave tech departments and become a cross-cutting issue of accountability journalism. That is the argument Dr. Rose N. Kimani and Attila Mong make in our latest roadmap paper "Securing the future of journalism in the age of AI." 👉 Slide through the carousel to find a practical reporting checklist!

Online violence is a global problem. Kenya has a local solution. The new app Bytes of Change is an innovative platform that allows victims of online attacks, such as online harassment and scams, to report directly to police. With the secure app, victims can easily and safely file a report, upload evidence and even follow investigations. Health and Economic development strategy Organization (HEDSO), the NGO behind the app, has been working to open up the conversation about gender-based violence in Busia County since 2019. They go to schools and churches, and even hold football matches to sensitize and raise awareness about gender-based violence in the community. Bytes of Change is their latest project, which has already gotten results since its release just a few months ago and garnered national attention. The DW Akademie project TrustLab developed the project and provided grants and mentorship, with funding from the European Union.

When media organizations negotiate with Big Tech one by one, the playing field is anything but level. This is particularly true for smaller and local publishers, which often lack the legal, technical and financial resources to negotiate with global technology companies on equal terms. It’s a challenge participants discussed during our #DWFreedom "The Next Chapter: Journalism in the Age of AI" event series earlier this year. Those conversations have now fed into a new strategic roadmap by Dr. Rose N. Kimani and Attila Mong on "securing the future of journalism in the age of AI." One way forward? Don’t negotiate alone! Collective action can help media organizations: 🤝 negotiate licensing, AI training rights and compensation together 🧩 pool technology, infrastructure and expertise 📣 amplify their voice in policy debates 🌐 reduce their dependence on dominant platforms Sally Hammoud, Monsur Hussain and Ruslan Mihalevschi reviewed the roadmap before publication. They agree that joining forces will be crucial.👇 Share your perspective: What should collective action look like?

Your speech might be helping train AI right now. But are you being paid for it? AI systems scrape recordings from Indigenous communities across the web, often without speakers' consent, attribution or compensation, says #DWFreedom guest author Subhashish Panigrahi. As AI systems expand globally, they need language data: words, conversations, translations, accents and cultural context. If communities provide the data that makes AI useful, should they get a share of the value created? The debate goes far beyond copyright. It touches on equity, representation and digital rights, especially for speakers of underrepresented languages. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ehu2FAmf
