On Friday night, we hosted our fourth Culture Night Event: "WeSpeak.ie LIVE: Healing, Hope and Community". Here’s a sneak peek at the event.. and at some of the incredible creative work that came from the process. We were blown away by the spoken word, poetry, stories, manuscripts, paintings, songs and so much more created and shared by the 23 participants who took part in the project. Each person brought their own voice, perspective and creativity to the space. Some took to the stage, some shared their work in other ways and some chose to remain anonymous.. every contribution was valued. Over a series of creative workshops with Fighting Words, participants explored what "healing, hope and community" mean to them, discovering different ways to express their experiences through art and storytelling. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who took part and everyone who joined us on the night with such warmth and kindness. Thank you to Hen's Teeth for hosting us in your beautiful venue, to our ISL interpreters who ensured we had an accessible event, to the Fighting Words facilitators and mentors, our volunteers on the evening and to all our DRCC staff who make our work possible. Thank you for helping us create a space where stories could be shared, creativity could flourish, and survivors’ voices could be heard. 💜 📲If you need support, the 24hr, National Helpline is available for free, confidential, non-judgmental support. ✍Visit WeSpeak.ie or share your story, art or poetry today. Every story matters.

We were so pleased to support the 'Our Special Day' book project with Tosú - new beginnings for people with convictions in Ireland and Shelton Abbey. Developed by writers at Shelton Abbey, the book helps fathers in prison maintain strong relationships with their children. Presented in a creative, child-centred format, it follows a child's first visit to their father after his sentencing. Thank you to the brilliant team who supported the writers: Shane Hegarty, Colm Quearney, Una Ward, Kenny Doyle, Neala Murphy, Mark Davidson, Iryna Avalishvili, Lorcan Brenna and Rosa Devine.

  • Last week, we had a great time with fourth-class students from Catherine McAuley National School at the Ogier in Ireland offices. The students began their story in the boardroom, joined by Editor McConkey via Teams. They completed their stories individually in the canteen during a pizza lunch. Their story, featuring a marshmallow and a pickle, impressed our editor and was published both as a booklet and online. We sincerely thank Neasa and the Ogier team for their partnership and warm hospitality. We also appreciate basis.point for their ongoing support, and especially thank the young authors for their outstanding creativity. #FightingWords #WritetoRight

Today is International Literacy Day and a day to celebrate the writers of Shelton Abbey! It's 2 weeks until we officially launch 'Our Special Day', a creative storybook in which the writers re-cast a child's first visit to Daddy in prison. The book transforms the visit into an adventurous trip to a castle with knights at the gate and a friendly dog to welcome you! The writers imbued the images and words with a lot of love. The creative process, facilitated by Shane Hegarty and supported by Tosú - new beginnings for people with convictions in Ireland's Neala Murphy, was filled with humour and solidarity between dads. And we're grateful to SOLAS (An tSeirbhís Oideachais Leanúnaigh agus Scileanna) for the support via the Adult Literacy for life fund. The storybook is a testament to the commitment of the writers to helping other dads in closed prisons who are longing to see their kids while worried about their absence from the family. Please contact us if you'd like to attend the launch of this magical storybook on 22nd September where we will also share our Tosú Annual Report 2025. #tosu #tosunewbeginnings
