Expertise in ADR is hard to demonstrate. Stakes are high. The fate of companies, people, and even nations can hang in the balance. There is no room for error. So how can someone know that their arbitrator will meet the very highest standards of ethical conduct and professionalism? An FCIArb after their name signifies just that. The Accelerated Route to Fellowship in International Arbitration is a rigorous, focused assessment programme for experienced practitioners seeking to prove their command of arbitration law, procedure and award writing. Candidates are challenged to apply their knowledge in practice, including the preparation of a reasoned and enforceable arbitral award. Led by Anna Stylianou FCIArb, the programme provides a route towards the internationally recognised professional distinction of Ciarb Fellowship. If you are ready to test your experience and take an important step towards becoming a Ciarb Fellow, contact Iberian.chapter@ciarb.org or martalya.martinibriceno@ceu.es today. Arbitrations often hinge on the testimony of experts. Knowledge gained over a lifetime of rigorous academic study and industry experience bring clarity to situations that, to everyone but a world expert, would be impenetrable. However, if we want to ensure that ADR is more efficient, how that expertise is used matters. That’s why we’ve made our latest report, Party-Appointed Expert Witnesses in International Arbitration: Effectiveness and Best Practice, available to anyone that wants to read it. https://lnkd.in/etfen2UC ⏫ Click here to get your free copy and help us make ADR more efficient ⏫

Nobody enjoys a tax dispute. Not even, one assumes the tax authorities. Yet disputes are an unavoidable part of any tax system. The more useful question is whether they must always be lengthy, expensive, and destined for court. In his latest article, Mika Nissinen examines whether alternative dispute resolution mechanisms could streamline tax disputes while strengthening legal protection. Drawing on Finland’s effective pre-court process and lessons from Portugal’s tax arbitration model, the article considers what a more efficient system might look like. Read "Rethinking Tax Dispute Resolution: A Targeted Review of Finland and Reflections from Portugal Tax Arbitration” in the latest issue of Arbitration: The International Journal of Arbitration, Mediation and Dispute Management. Ciarb members can access the Journal via MyCiarb.

It is easy to say that dispute resolution should combine global standards with local insight. It is rather harder to decide what that means when international rules, domestic institutions, and commercial expectations collide. That is exactly why OIC Arbitration Week 2026 matters. Following the success of its inaugural edition, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Arbitration Centre (OIC-AC) Arbitration Week 2026 will bring together leading voices from arbitration, mediation, business and public institutions under the theme “Building Bridges in Dispute Resolution: Harmonizing Global Standards and Local Insights.” Discussions will range from UNCITRAL reforms and investment arbitration to dispute prevention, Islamic finance, institutional cooperation and the development of young practitioners. This is a not-to-be missed networking opportunity for those that want to be involved in the future of Arbitration. The contract was signed. The concrete was poured. Then came the dispute. On 1 October, the International Construction Arbitration Conference 2026 at King's College London brought together counsel and experts to examine how public contracts, procurement rules and competing legal systems can complicate major construction projects. Ciarb President Cesar Pereira C.Arb FCIArb chaired the opening session alongside Eric Johnson, Matthew Smith and Taner Dedezade. They discussed urgent relief, dispute boards, state involvement, and the danger of drafting clauses so complex that parties argue over where to fight before confronting the dispute itself. We'd like to thank our gracious hosts at King's College London, all those who attended the event and everyone who participated in this insightful discussion. #ConstructionArbitration #InternationalArbitration #ConstructionLaw #DisputeResolution #ADR #PublicContracts

Far too often in ADR, it can feel like everyone is focused on the next big thing. We strive for constant improvement, look to the next milestone, and always demand more of ourselves as dispute professionals. This commitment to leave things better than we found them is an admirable one. Without it, disputes might still be resolved by trial by ordeal! However, it’s also important to recognise when our hard-working colleagues have achieved something of note. With this in mind, we’d like to thank all those who attended our recent event, The Future of Expert Evidence: Lessons from the Ciarb Report and the Development of Emerging International Standards, in Copenhagen on 7 October. Held in partnership with our friends at the International Bar Association and Plesner, the afternoon was one of productive knowledge sharing. Moderated by Aruna de Silva, we enjoyed hearing the perspectives of Michael Tonkin C.Arb FCIArb, Ciarb Deputy President and Partner, HKA (Dubai); Pamela McDonald MCIArb, Partner and Co-Head of International Arbitration, Pinsent Masons (Doha); Alexandra Johnson, Partner, Pestalozzi (Geneva); and Jimmy Skjold Hansen, Partner, Plesner. This event is part of a wider push by Ciarb and our partners for the better use of expert evidence in ADR. #ADR #legal #expertwitness
