Still smiling from last week's "Breaking into Public Affairs" workshop with I have a voice (IHAV) and Ellwood Atfield! 😊 Rachel Smith, Josh Gray and I spent the evening with a room full of people taking their first steps into policy and public affairs careers. We covered where to look for roles, how to write a strong CV, building your online personal brand, and preparing for interviews. I led the online personal brand session, and a few tips discussed : 💡 Your LinkedIn is often the first thing a recruiter checks after your CV, so make sure the two tell the same story, dates included. 💡 Your headline should say what you do or the role you're looking for, not just "graduate". 💡 Employers look beyond LinkedIn too. Think before you post, and check your privacy settings. The energy in the room was brilliant, and so were the questions. A huge thank you to I have a voice (IHAV) for having us, and to everyone who joined us for the evening. #PublicAffairs #EarlyCareers #CareersAdvice

  • 👀 If a recruiter googled you today, what would they find? This was one of the questions posed by recruitment experts Ellwood Atfield at our ‘Breaking In: Public Affairs, Policy & Comms’ workshop last Thursday. Bringing together students, graduates, and early-career professionals, the evening was packed with practical advice on breaking into the industry and standing out in an increasingly competitive job market. One of our biggest highlights?  The fascinating discussion around digital footprints and how our online presence can shape professional opportunities, influence first impressions, and even impact how recruiters perceive us before we’ve stepped into an interview.  We’re still buzzing from the energy in the room. The level of engagement from attendees was incredible, with thoughtful questions and valuable personal perspectives shared throughout the evening.  A huge thank you to Kate Hannagan, Josh Gray, and Rachel Smith from Ellwood Atfield for delivering such an insightful workshop, and to every single attendee who made the room so engaging! 📸 Photos from the evening by Sophie Frear. Hey Network 👋🏾 , I’m putting myself out there and looking for an opportunity. Over a month ago I’ve had the opportunity to take part in I have a voice CIC (IHAV) Public Affairs Training Scheme, gaining a much better understanding of what working in policy and public affairs actually looks like in practice. I visited People's Partnership, Grayling, GK Strategy, British Business Bank and Barnardo's to see the work they do within policy and public affairs. Through IHAV, I’ve developed experience in the policy process, stakeholder mapping, political monitoring and communications, including working as part of a team to develop and present our campaign on the changes to Graduate Visa, why the government should reverse it and how international students can contribute to the UK economy. What I enjoyed most about the process was understanding the evidence; different perspectives around it, and thinking about how I turn that into something that can influence decision-makers. IHAV has built on the experience I’ve gained through my time at University of Nottingham, my placement at Pathway Housing Solutions, and my involvement with the Black Sport Collective. Across these experiences, I’ve developed skills in research, writing, stakeholder engagement, communications and project organisation. I’m looking for entry-level opportunities in policy, public affairs, influencing, research or external affairs. So, I’m putting this out to my network: If you work in policy, public affairs, research, campaigning, communications or a related field, I’d really appreciate any advice, introductions or opportunities you think I should know about. And if you know of an organisation looking for someone I’d love to hear from you. Thank you! 🫶🏾

  • An important evening at the House of Commons last night, celebrating the launch of the APPG for Schools, Learning and Assessment’s new report: ‘Empowering students as democratic citizens: how schools and colleges can prepare young people for votes at 16.’ 🗳️ It was great to connect with other organisations championing youth participation, and an absolute pleasure to meet Dr Freya Aquarone in person, the brilliant researcher behind the report. 🤔 So how do we actually prepare young people for votes at 16?? 💬 At I have a voice CIC, we believe the answer lies in empowering young people through youth-led delivery, alongside backing teachers with the resources needed to bring meaningful political education to ALL students. -- We are incredibly proud to have been part of this vital conversation. Not only was our written submission published, but the report also featured oral evidence from our very own Alishba Amir: 📝 "While voting is a vast part of any democratic system, democracy does, in fact, go further than this, ensuring that young people have a voice in any decision that affects their life and future." 📝 -- Thank you again for having us! We look forward to continuing our work to empower the next generation, build their confidence, and support their participation in our democracy. 🗳️✨ #VotesAt16 #YouthVoices #RepresentationOfThePeopleBill
