Young people's mental health is one of Europe's urgent public policy challenges. A recent European Parliament report highlights the need for more holistic, community-based approaches that address the social factors influencing wellbeing. Social prescribing could have an important role to play. By connecting young people with community activities, peer support, culture, sport, volunteering, and other local resources, it can complement clinical care and help tackle the wider determinants of mental health. In our latest blog, we explore what the report says and the potential role of social prescribing across Europe. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/evcNkJEM #MentalHealth #YouthMentalHealth #SocialPrescribing #PublicHealth #Wellbeing #EuropeanParliament #HealthPolicy #Prevention #CommunityHealth #Europe

The Government-commissioned independent review into mental health conditions, ADHD and autism, published last week, confirmed that the rise in mental health problems among young people is real and highlighted the need for earlier support. The review also recognised social prescribing as “one existing route for connecting people with volunteering, physical activity, arts, nature and community support”. Importantly, the review notes that this approach “illustrates how participation beyond employment can become a practical aim of services rather than an aspiration”. Research is already showing the potential impact. A recent study found that social prescribing may help young people waiting for specialist mental health services by improving resilience, behaviour and relationships with others. 🔗 Read more about the findings: https://lnkd.in/enRJKKZw #MentalHealth #YoungPeople #SocialPrescribing #MentalHealthSupport #HealthAndWellbeing

Responding to the independent review into mental health conditions, ADHD and autism published today, we welcome the focus on the wider circumstances that affect people’s mental health, and the need to respond in a way that genuinely addresses those needs. The review rightly highlights the role of social prescribing in connecting people to personalised community support, which can help improve wellbeing, confidence and belonging. The forthcoming Mental Health Strategy must build on what has been achieved, strengthening links between specialist NHS services and community-based support. “I came to Poland almost five years ago, and I remember very well how overwhelming the beginning can be…. Looking back now, I realise how much easier some of those situations could have been if I had known where to go, whom to ask, or simply had someone to help me take that first step. That is one of the reasons why I wanted to become a link worker.” In our latest blog, Krystyna Kazandzhy shares how her own experiences of migrating from Ukraine inspired her to become a link worker, supporting refugees and migrants as part of the SP-EU project.
