Delighted to see this in print! We scoped out the academic literature to see what #health #professionals are being taught about #arts and #health, and he #visual and #performing arts are being used in medical and health care training. We identified far more papers than we expected, outlining how everything from dance to sculpture is currently being used in medical training, although it’s not always clear why, or if it is effective. We also identified that artists are often left out from creative health education, which seems like a missed opportunity. But the biggest surprise was that only 10% of the papers we found aimed to teach health professionals about arts or music therapies. Most of the papers used creative activities to teach trainees specialist knowledge, or professional development. Thanks to Arts Council England who funded the project, with support from National Centre for Creative Health (NCCH) and the Royal Society Public Health Special Interest Group in Arts and Health, and thanks to the many stakeholders who shaped the protocol. Can Dungeons & Dragons improve wellbeing in neurodivergent people? 🎲 A new article published in our journal in partnership with Arts Council England and the National Centre for Creative Health (NCCH) suggests it can. The article explored ‘Roll for Initiative!’, a D&D based creative health intervention run at a cultural hub. In the projetct, participants were taught how to play and run the game and engaged in playing across 24 sessions. Researchers found long-term health benefits from playing D&D. Participants: 👥 Formed lasting social bonds 💬 Discovered new ways to express themselves ☺️ Found a sense of belonging On top of this, dropout rates were lower than other creative health courses held at the hub. The article argues that the project proves that creative health can go beyond traditional arts and crafts, offering opportunities to find support and build lasting social connections.
