UK Feminista’s Director, Nina Humphries, spoke to BBC Politics South East this weekend about the need for Government action to ensure all schools and colleges are taking whole school approaches to prevent sexism and sexual harassment. The programme showcased Tunbridge Wells Girls' Grammar School's On My Way campaign – a fantastic example of whole school action where the impact has extended far beyond the school gates. UK Feminista was pleased to attend Shout Out UK's parliamentary event this week on tackling online misogyny and contribute to the discussion on the systemic changes urgently needed to prevent sexism and violence against women and girls as part of a whole of society approach - from prevention action in schools to holding online companies accountable. It is crucial that this includes whole school approaches that challenge sexism and promote equality across the polices, practices and culture of school communities. How do we tackle online misogyny, hold tech platforms accountable, and support young people navigating digital spaces? Earlier this week, Shout Out UK as Secretariat to the APPG on Political and Media Literacy organised a powerful joint meeting with the APPG on Men and Boys’ Issues at the Houses of Parliament, hosted by Lord Iain McNicol and chaired by Mark Brooks OBE of the Centre for Policy Research on Men and Boys. Bringing together parliamentarians, experts, and civil society, the panel explored whole-of-society solutions to counter toxic online environments: 🔹 Inoculating Boys from Misogyny & Supporting Parents SOUK’s Matteo Bergamini MBE and Amelia Fairney, co-authors of Man Enough: How to Protect Boys from Online Misogyny, highlighted that boys are not born misogynists - they are often targeted during moments of vulnerability. Preventative media literacy, open dialogue at home, and school-based support are essential to build resilience before harm takes root. 🔹 Demonetising the Manosphere Eline Yara Jeanné and Alex Murray from The Conscious Ad Network presented findings from their Monetisation of the Manosphere report. They revealed how automated ad placements cause major household brands to inadvertently fund misogynistic content, calling for greater advertising transparency and platform accountability. 🔹 Defending Women in Public Life Jess Asato MP shared her personal experience taking legal action against the SpaceXAI platform, highlighting how non-consensual deepfakes and targeted abuse suppress women’s democratic participation and freedom of speech. A huge thank you to Lord Iain McNicol for opening the session, all the speakers, as well as guests from academia and civil society from the Molly Rose Foundation, UK Feminista, Everyone's Invited, Social Stamp, and UCL for driving a vital discussion on algorithmic harm, gaming safety, and systemic change. At Shout Out UK, we remain committed to expanding our counter-misogyny initiatives and equipping the next generation with the critical thinking skills needed to navigate the digital world safely. #MediaLiteracy #OnlineSafety #CounterMisogyny #DigitalCitizenship #EdTech #ShoutOutUK #ManEnough

UK Feminista was pleased to sign this letter to the Prime Minister - calling for urgent action to stop sexual violence in schools and colleges ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dePPvDY5 Thank you to End Violence Against Women Coalition for coordinating it. The letter follows The Guardian's investigation which found that at least 1,700 sexual offences in schools against children aged under 13 are reported to police each year. 📕 Almost a decade ago, landmark research by UK Feminista and the National Education Union exposed the scale of sexual harassment and abuse in UK schools. Our 2024 joint survey with Unison provided further evidence that sexual harassment is widespread in the education system - with school and college staff also experiencing it. We should not still be having to ask the Prime Minister to act. We need system-wide change, now. 📒 Our recent System Change report shows what needs to happen: Government, inspectorates and individual schools & colleges must all work together to embed a 'Whole School Approach' to preventing sexism and sexual violence. One-off workshops or single lessons are not enough. We need long-term, school-wide action to make schools & colleges safe for girls. 🙏 Thank you to Carol Mochan MSP - who has questioned Scotland's First Minister about why websites advertising prostitution are being allowed to profit from industrial-scale sexual exploitation in plain sight - despite being illegal. This follows an event we held with Carol Mochan MSP and Tracy Gilbert MP in the Scottish Parliament last week. ⚖️ While we are pleased to see the First Minister recognise the exploitation on these platforms, the suggestion that it is a lack of regulation that is blocking action against them is unfounded. Pimping websites are already illegal in Scotland. The problem is these laws are not being enforced. Police Scotland must take urgent action to enforce Scotland's laws against sexual exploitation.
Following my event last week with UK Feminista I asked the FM to commit to legislation that combats trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of women during this Parliament. We must do more to stop this shameful practice #FMQs.

📢 Scotland's criminal justice system must hold websites advertising prostitution accountable for facilitating sex trafficking and sexual exploitation: that was the message of an event UK Feminista was honoured to co-organise in the Scottish Parliament last week. 💬 Hosted by Carol Mochan MSP, there were powerful contributions from Tracy Gilbert MP, Vice Chair of the APPG on Commercial Sexual Exploitation; Diane Robertson Martin CBE, Chair of A Model For Scotland; Eleanor Lyons, Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner; and Kat Banyard, UK Feminista's Head of Programme on commercial sexual exploitation. 💻 Websites advertising prostitution have long been recognised as a key facilitator of sex trafficking in the UK. Yet in Scotland - they shouldn't have been operating in the first place. Trading in the prostitution of another person is a crime under Part 1, Section 11 of the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995 – online and offline. Additionally, under the Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Scotland) Act 2015, facilitating the transportation of a person who is subject to someone aiding, abetting or compelling their prostitution is human trafficking - a crime that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Speakers highlighted how websites advertising sexual exploitation in Scotland are flouting both of these laws. ⚖️ It is vital that Scotland's criminal justice system holds the website operators to account - and finally delivers justice to victims of sex trafficking. 👉 Read more about the event on our website https://lnkd.in/eUER5kif Police Scotland Adam Wilson Kiana Greenan The Scottish Women's Convention linda thompson Dr. Jacci Stoyle Simita Kumar Bronagh Andrew Neil Gray Kirsten Oswald Tonia Antoniazzi MP Kirsteen Sullivan Tim Cairns Elly Hanson Naomi Miles Sarah Green Purna Sen Lauren Agnew Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service
