Pokmon of the Day

Why did the other Silver Pokmon not like to swim with the Donphan? (click to find out!)

February 14, 2000

Mondays are special days indeed for Pokmen and women -- every Monday, IGNpocket will be sneaking into this country and (onto our web site) one of the brand new Pokmons from the Japanese Silver and Gold Pokmon games. You won't be able to catch these newest Pokcritters until the games' release in September, 2000, so this is your only chance to get your Pokdose of Pokmania for almost a year. There are 100 new Pokmons total, so keep coming back to IGNpocket to catch them all!

Also, be sure to check out our PokContest once you learn all about this Pokmon -- the prize pack is all new (or should I say "Neo"). Head on over to our Contest page where you must answer one question about this Pokmon. Get the answer right, and you'll be entered to win the Pokmon prize of that day. But to win, you'll have to register it's a painless process, and well worth the three minutes of your time.

Now, on to today's Pokmon of the Day:

Donphan (#232)

Image Pronunciation:
DON-FUN

Element
Rock

Type
Normal

Height
3' 0"

Evolved from:
#231 Gomazou

Techniques
Spinning Tackle

Why did the other Silver Pokmon not like to swim with the Donphan! (click to find out!)
Because they wore their trunks on their heads!

Sure, I don't get it either, but it got you to click through, didn't it?

Donphan (or Donfan, or Dorfuyan -- the American name has not been trademarked yet) was briefly in the opening sequence of Pokemon: The First Movie. It's a strong elephant-type character with a shell that looks like a road tire on his back for armor (it may well be a tire, as despite his girth and stature, he's only about three feet high). Donphan's spinning tackle, which compliments his defensive abilities with an awesome offense, is learned at level 41. Evolved from Gomazou (another Gold / Silver Pokmon) at level 25, this Pokmon's defensive abilities make him very popular for balancing out your team.

A great fan of Donphan (perhaps the world's biggest Donphan fan) had this to say about why he loves this Pokmon best: "Why not? Donphan obviously is the best Pokmon, and Golem comes in second. Donphan is one of very few Pokmon that has a spinning tackle attack, and soon, a Pokmon episode entitled 'Donphan Valley' will be the best episode."

To find a Donphan in Pokmon Silver / Gold, the LoudGerad the Donphan Fan says play through until you've defeated Ibuki and picked up your eighth badge. "Make your way home surf eastward until you come to a coastal area with a cave. Enter the cave and move northward until you come up upon a house. A girl inside will heal all of your Pokmon. Keep going north, fighting trainers. You will find yourself in a much simpler, trainer-free Victory Road. Here you can catch for the very first time, the best Pokmon, Donphan."

Thanks GameFAQs and LoudGerad for info on Donphan.

NOTE: The name of this Pokmon will likely change when the Silver and Gold Pokmon Game Boy Color games are translated and brought over. Names of Pokmons are plays on words (both in Japan and the US), so expect the names to be witty and charismatic translations of the Japanese names.

Now that you've gotten your Poklesson and you are a Pokscholar, take this info over to our Pokmon Contest and enter yourself for a chance to win some great Pokprizes. Get the answer right, and you may win yourself the Pokmon 'Neo' Prize Pack -- "Neo" Ultra-Limited Edition Japanese Pokmon cards (based on the Silver and Gold Pokmon games, and not available in stores anywhere in the US), Japanese Pokmon puzzles, Pokmon Key Chains, Pokmon videos... Everything but the Poksink! It's a super Pokfreak-out! So take the Pokchallenge, and put some Pok in your pocket!

If you haven't registered, get your butt over to our Registration page and put all the pertinent information so you get in on the goods.
