Purpose Commons recently released a report on what 1,300+ young people did when they were given $400 and the trust to act on what mattered to them. The report includes: 📖 Their stories 💞 What they reported (98% agreed it was a meaningful experience) 💥 The barriers they hit 💡 What it might mean for those of us who work with and fund young people Formal analysis is still underway with Purpose Science and Innovation Exchange, so it’s a checkpoint, not a conclusion. Congratulations to Dawn Androphy and the Allswell team. We're so glad to be part of your journey!
Today, I’m excited to share that Allswell has closed an oversubscribed $7 million seed round led by Rethink Impact, LP with Magnify Ventures, Ulu Ventures, Hopelab Ventures, Techstars, and Amboy Street Ventures. We are building the medical home for the LGBTQ+ community on insurance and Medicaid, starting with behavioral health. Our patients see therapists who are specifically trained to work with the LGBTQ+ community, receive evidence-based care tailored to their needs, and most pay little or nothing out of pocket. We deliver more than 1,500 billable sessions a month across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and our patients stay in care. The LGBTQ+ community deserves care built for them from the first visit. The market is large, and growing. Only 5% of Gen X identifies as LGBTQ+, compared with upwards of 25% of Gen Z. This round funds our growth in the DMV area, new clinical programs for patients, enhanced trainings for clinicians, and psychiatric medication management planned for next year. We are grateful to partner with Heidi Krauel Patel, Rethink Impact, Julie Wroblewski, Magnify Ventures, Miriam Rivera, Maria Salamanca, Summer B., CFA, Ulu Ventures, Erin Sietstra, Hopelab Ventures, Keith Camhi, Techstars, Carli Sapir, Amboy Street Ventures, Unseen, powered by Seae Ventures and Erica Murdock And none of this happens without the Allswell team. Connor Gordon and I are lucky to build alongside you. Thank you Brock E.W. Turner for sharing our story! https://lnkd.in/gHRxnCwU

Are you a family caregiver? With a 45% increase over the last decade, 1 in 4 Americans is now a family caregiver. Joshua Lavra shines a light on a generation quietly holding up the infrastructure of American family life. With about 1 in 10 teens and young adults now serving as family caregivers, we need to question the systems that are failing us. 💔 "Where adulthood is framed as a solo achievement and families are often scattered across geographies, reverse parenting often plays out in private...without the community infrastructure that would make it sustainable. Distance compounds everything. When the closest family member is a six-hour flight away, every crisis becomes a logistical emergency on top of an emotional one." Josh is the Hopelab Principal of Youth-Led Innovation and a Public Voices Fellow in our fellowship with The OpEd Project. Read his op-ed about youth caregivers 👇 https://lnkd.in/gq8t8xQf

Just published in Psychology Today! 🥳 Weeds or Medicine? What Our Elders Knew About Mental Health. My grandmother sent me to pick dandelion greens from a field near our apartment in Pittsburgh. I complained. I picked them anyway. She cooked them into her collard greens and made me drink the pot likker.🤣😅 Turns out she was supporting my mental health. The gut-brain axis is one of the fastest growing areas in mental health science. And Black elders were practicing nutritional psychiatry long before it had a name. The pharmacy is in the yard.‼️ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ea_2ADi7 The OpEd Project Hopelab #Hopelab #PublicVoices #AncestralHealing #BlackHealth #YouthMentalHealth #GutBrainAxis #FoodAsMedicine #AncestralWisdom #BlackWellness #PsychologyToday #CeibaWoman #AncestralRoots

We are excited to release our report and share key insights from the 1,300+ young people in 42 states, D.C., and Guam who were given $400 to act on what mattered to them! For a long time, the field has asked what young people need from us. The Contribution Project asks: what might the world need from them? Among national participants who completed pre- and post-surveys, 98% agreed the project was a meaningful experience. This report an honest and important checkpoint in the quest to create environments that support youth purpose across the country. Formal analysis of the national data is still underway with our partners at PSiX. This report allows us to start where we always start: with the lived experience of the young people we hope to serve. Inside, you’ll find stories of what young people did, participant reported impact, and a look into the barriers young people ran into, in their own words. You will also see our sense-making about what this might mean for the field, and the questions we’re still asking. If you run a program that helps young people contribute, fund this kind of work, or want to bring it to your community, we’d love to hear from you. Our next step is the Contribution Collaborative, a network for communities already helping young people contribute and communities that want to bring this model to the young people at home. Get in touch: https://lnkd.in/gyUvZix9 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gCTdaa_J So much appreciation for everyone who has helped make this possible and for those already supporting the next phase of the work! Does AI expand or limit young people's power and voice? 💫 That's the question that Katie Salen wants every AI system that's developed for young people to answer. Some kids describe generative AI as a kind of creative accelerator, helping them turn a stuck idea into a finished product. But when AI takes over the initiating, imagining, and finishing on a young person's behalf, it usurps vital developmental work that belongs to young people themselves. Katie is a professor of informatics at the UC Irvine, as well as a game designer, a member of the Connected Learning Lab, and Executive Director of Connected Camps. She is also Hopelab Public Voices Fellow in our fellowship with The OpEd Project. "Imagining a beautiful, hoped-for future, I formatted this poem to mimic the sight of a mirror placed in front of another mirror: a long tunnel of reflections, hued greener and greener as the light continues to refract. Using this format as a base, this poem plays with the concept of love reflecting between people to create positive, revolutionary change, imagining a future that is environmentally sound, conscious of its past, and does not fracture in the face of struggle or disaster."—Ivi Hua 🪞 Ivi Hua (Livia K.) is an Asian-American writer, dreamer, & poet. She is the author of Body, Dissected (kith books, 2024). She co-founded Young Poets Workshops in 2022 & serves as co-director of the SUNHOUSE Mentorship. Ivi believes in the initiation of change through language & love beyond the bounds of sorrow. To celebrate the launch of Hopelab Futures, we invited young artists to share their perspectives on the future of mental health and well-being in 25 years. Can we trust AI to count our votes? 🗳️ Although humans are fallible, so is AI. Davis Austria, DNP, MBA, MSN, RN, explains that the safeguards in place to ensure our votes are counted accurately are part of the democratic process. He shares that although AI isn't counting our votes, AI and machine-assisted systems are already involved in our election process. "The best election systems do not ask voters to trust either a person or a machine. They produce evidence." Davis is a health equity innovator and educator at Xavier University of Louisiana who develops culturally responsive digital health solutions using AI. He's also a Hopelab HBCU Translational Science Fellow and Public Voices Fellow in our fellowship with The OpEd Project. Read his full op-ed 👇 https://lnkd.in/e9ZgxC6U
