Many of today's dominant climate narratives are too narrow and too easy to portray as expensive, disruptive, or disconnected from everyday life. As a result, they shrink support for climate progress instead of expanding it. Our CEO Eric Asche be speaking at Mountain Towns 2030 Summit in Sun Valley on October 14 on how leaders can engage new audiences in their community who have latent demand for climate solutions but may not traditionally identify with the climate movement by showing how climate solutions can address the issues people are already concerned about: https://lnkd.in/esKP2sSp

Last week was my first Climate Week NYC as CEO of Potential Energy Coalition. I really valued the opportunity to connect in person with my team, learn from others, and explore new ways we can work together to amplify our collective impact. This Climate Week reaffirmed for me that there are tremendous solutions already underway. The challenge is building broader public engagement and momentum to help those solutions move faster and further. That means reaching beyond people who already identify with the climate movement and helping more people see how these solutions connect to what they care about. I shared how we can do more of that on The Associated Press and AP Fund for Journalism’s “How we talk about climate change” panel, moderated by Peter Prengaman. When Potential Energy asked consumers what ESG stands for, one guessed "eggs, sausages, grits." Barely anyone across 15,000 respondents got it right. That gap is fuelling a rethink of sustainable finance's vocabulary. Potential Energy Coalition's Will Howard found "responsible business" tests best, precisely because its vagueness lets people project their own values onto it, while former Morningstar research head Hortense Bioy, CFA defends ESG as "a powerful framework." Sjunde AP-fonden, AP7's Johan Florén takes a different view: "we used to talk about the triple bottom line... then ESG... that's no longer the hot three letter word it once was." 📸 A few photos from our roundtable at Tavern on the Green during Climate Week in New York. Our Chief Research Officer James Kanagasooriam and Potential Energy Coalition's Elan Strait led the conversation, centred on new research into how climate attitudes across different regions could give rise to the political institutions of the future. 🙌 Thanks to everyone who came along, and to Goals House for co-hosting the roundtable with us.

As we gather this week for Climate Week NYC to discuss how to push forward climate progress, I want to remind leaders and advocates that they should feel empowered to talk about climate change and its solutions. I shared with Fiona Harvey at The Guardian Potential Energy Coalition’s new research, which clearly demonstrates that it's not WHETHER you talk about climate change, it's HOW. People expect leaders to speak up and take action: https://lnkd.in/geAiBYPt You can read Potential Energy Coalition’s research on global demand for climate solutions and the best narratives for driving demand for action here: https://lnkd.in/ge6vAZ_y

This is the summer the consequences of climate change have truly hit home for many people. Yet American leaders are dangerously quiet about climate change. I discuss in my Reuters article why leaders should feel empowered to talk about the consequences we’re all feeling, with plans to start fixing them: https://lnkd.in/ewdcKAmY As we approach New York Climate Week, here are some tips for how leaders and climate communicators can talk about climate change in a way that connects instead of polarizes: - Focus heavily on the human and material consequences of climate change: for the people I love, for my health, for my wallet. - Make the cause concrete: “pollution” reminds people climate change is a problem we can solve. - Make the cure exciting: Instead of focusing solely on the things we’re banning and blocking, spend time on what we’re building toward. MORE energy to affordably, securely meet rising demand. For more guidance, check out Potential Energy Coalition’s latest global research on the most effective messages: https://lnkd.in/ge6vAZ_y
