Art3Lab Spotlight: Are NFTs Ready to Protect Artists? As part of the Art3Lab project's exploration of trust, transparency and intellectual property rights in digital art markets, recent research has examined whether next-generation NFTs can effectively protect Australian and Indigenous artists' copyright. The findings raise important concerns. While NFTs promise secure ownership and provenance of digital artworks, analysis of copyright protection, security mechanisms and artist identification systems found that current NFT frameworks are not yet ready to adequately safeguard Australian and Indigenous artists' rights. This research highlights exactly why Art3Lab's work is so important. By collaborating with organisations such as the Australian Copyright Council, Copyright Agency, National Association for the Visual Arts and Australian Network for Art and Technology , the project is investigating how digital platforms can better protect creators, reduce fraud and preserve trust in the growing digital arts economy. Even though NFTs have lost their hype, important work is still continuing behind the scenes. #Art3Lab #DigitalArt #NFTs #Copyright #CyberSecurity #CreativeIndustries #IntellectualProperty #Research Read the full article at https://lnkd.in/grqxzWVR

Privacy just got less painful. Opera is introducing an opt-in mode so its free VPN automatically activates on public or unsecured Wi-Fi in the US and France. No need to remember to toggle protection—Opera handles it for you while you browse, work, or manage finances. This change matters: public Wi-Fi is a top target for snooping and data leakage, yet most users still don’t use VPNs regularly. Opera’s move helps bridge that gap, offering GDPR-compliant protection that’s independently audited and built-into the browser. What to watch: whether this auto-VPN rolls out globally, how users respond, and if competitors follow suit by making privacy seamless by default. #Privacy #Opera #VPN #Security #PublicWiFi #Browser https://lnkd.in/dRWRT_AW

One musician used AI-generated songs and bots to collect more than $8 million in streaming royalties. Now he's going to prison. Michael Smith, a North Carolina musician, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after running a massive streaming fraud scheme. He used AI-generated music to build a catalog of hundreds of thousands of songs, then he operated thousands of automated accounts to generate billions of fake streams across platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music. By spreading the fake plays across so many songs, he made the fraudulent activity harder for platforms to detect. This week on #FAFO Sony casestudy The phrase "if buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing" is a popular internet counter-argument that highlights the tension between modern digital distribution models and traditional property ethics. The Core Arguments • The Shift to Licensing: When you purchase digital media (such as video games, e-books, or movies) on modern storefronts, you are rarely buying a permanent physical or digital object. Instead, you are buying a limited, revocable license to access that content. • The Erosion of Permanence: Corporations frequently shut down servers, delist games, or revoke access to digital purchases without issuing refunds (as highlighted by discussions around platforms like Sony PlayStation). • The Definition of Theft: In a legal and physical sense, stealing involves depriving the owner of the possession and use of an item. When you copy a digital file, the original data remains intact, meaning nothing is physically taken away. • Copyright Infringement vs. Theft: Legally, unauthorized downloading or sharing is classified as copyright infringement or breach of contract rather than theft, though companies often use the emotional weight of the word "stealing" to reframe the debate

🔐 **Cybersecurity in the Music Industry: Are passkeys a step forward, or a hidden trap for creators?** As tech giants push to replace traditional passwords with **passkeys**, the general advice is to adopt them immediately. However, for artists, music managers, and independent labels, jumping in without understanding the trade-offs could create serious operational headaches. ⚠️ Here’s why non-technical music creators should think twice before ditching their current security setup: 📱 **Platform Lock-In** Passkeys are often tied directly to a specific ecosystem (like Apple or Google). If your team operates across multiple devices or platforms, managing access to vital portals—like streaming dashboards, royalty accounts, and distribution platforms—becomes far more complicated. 🤝 **Friction in Team Collaboration** The music business is collaborative. Managers, digital marketers, and artists often share access to brand accounts. Unlike standard credentials stored in a team password manager, passkeys are personal and device-bound, making secure delegation much harder. 🔄 **The Account Recovery Nightmare** Lose your device without a seamless cloud backup configured? Recovering accounts secured strictly by passkeys can lock you out of critical platforms at the worst possible time—like right before a major release. 💡 **The Safer Approach for Music Pros:** Rather than blindly adopting every new tech standard, prioritize digital sovereignty: * Use a reputable password manager with end-to-end encryption. * Enable app-based Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) rather than SMS where possible. * Maintain clear access control policies across your artist management team. Protecting your music catalog starts with protecting your digital identity. 🛡️🎧 How is your team managing cybersecurity across your digital platforms this year? Let’s discuss in the comments below. 👇 #MusicBusiness #Cybersecurity #MusicTech #IndieArtist #DigitalSecurity #ArtistManagement 🎵 Play Tune Music - Your Music Distribution Partner
