A big thanks to Jaci McDole for coordinating this great panel on digital piracy recemtly and to my colleague, Paul Doda, for coming to DC to participate! We have seen how this form of piracy has evolved to become even more dangerous for those downloading illegal content and for their networks.

Our September Cyber, Privacy & Copyright newsletter is now out, and this month's edition covers a lot of ground. In the EU, the Commission has proposed its KIDS Act, which sets a social media minimum age and safety-by-design requirements. California has taken a similar path with a sweeping package of laws on children's online safety. On enforcement, the Irish regulator has fined Google €403 million over its processing of location data, the EDPB has adopted a new five-step enforcement method, and EU Cyber Resilience Act incident reporting obligations have now taken effect. In the U.S., the Department of Justice has taken the position that training LLMs on copyrighted works is fair use. In Israel, the Supreme Court has banned the collection of real-time voter turnout data, and the Israel Bar Association has issued an expanded ethics opinion on lawyers' use of AI. Australia, meanwhile, is consulting on Privacy Act reform. Read the full edition to see what these changes could mean for your business. ⚠️ A Copyright Infringement Notice in My Spam Folder. Almost Fell for It! Today, I received an email claiming to be from the legal department of Lilith Games, accusing me of copyright infringement. The email looked quite serious. It mentioned: - Copyright infringement involving game mechanics, artwork, source code, and trademarks. - Legal action and financial compensation. - A strict 24-hour deadline to remove the allegedly infringing content. It even included a company address and a supposed reference document containing evidence. But here's where things got interesting. 👀 The link appeared to lead to the official Lilith Games website, but its actual destination was a Google Drive download containing a password-protected file. Fortunately, I only opened the link and didn't download anything. I decided to investigate further and found reports of similar phishing campaigns targeting developers and content creators using fake copyright notices, legal threats, and malicious attachments. Although I haven't independently confirmed whether this particular email is fraudulent, it has several major warning signs. A quick reminder to fellow developers and indie game creators: ✅ Always check the actual destination of links, not just the displayed text. ✅ Never download unexpected password-protected attachments. ✅ Verify legal notices through a company's official communication channels. ✅ Don't let threats of legal action or artificial deadlines pressure you into acting without verification. As developers, we spend so much time securing our applications that sometimes we forget we're also potential targets. Has anyone else received a similar email claiming to be from Lilith Games or another gaming company? I'd be interested to know if this is part of a wider campaign targeting indie developers. Stay alert! 🔐 #CyberSecurity #Phishing #GameDevelopment #IndieDev #DeveloperCommunity #ScamAwareness
