NASA and Boeing have announced a revised development schedule for the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, targeting an uncrewed test flight in December 2026 or January 2027, followed by a crewed mission in 2028 under the command of astronaut Woody Hoburg. The updated plan follows the 2024 Crew Flight Test, which was classified as a Type A mishap after the spacecraft's service module reaction control thrusters operated outside their engineering qualification. Boeing has since implemented thermal modifications to the service module, an additional thruster valve design modification, new crew module thrusters, updated batteries, and minor parachute system changes to address 61 recommendations issued by the NASA Program Investigation Team in February 2026. The program is also transitioning from the retiring Atlas V rocket to the ULA Vulcan Centaur, which is currently undergoing its own human spaceflight certification process. The full article covers the contract modifications NASA and Boeing have made to restore previously optional Starliner missions, the role of redundancy in NASA's commercial crew strategy, and the parallel certification risks introduced by the Vulcan Centaur transition. #aviation #aerospace #NASA Read more: https://lnkd.in/ep_t-W94

As an industry, we must stop assuming that all space activity is conducted by NASA and the DoD. It's time we recognized that what sustains our companies isn't IDIQs or programs of record. For this to be real, Commerce must drive it, and it must be commercial in nature. How many times must NASA say it is unwilling to do commercial development for companies, investors, Agencies, and congressional committees to move beyond our legacies and demand real support and development from Commerce?

Earlier this month during the webinar, From Contact Windows to Continuous Connectivity: The Evolution of Space Mission Communications, Skylar Cox, CTO of Viasat Space & Mission Systems discussed various points about how mission operations for near Earth communications are evolving to deliver persistent, always-on communications as part of the larger NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration CSP project. He was joined by representatives from NASA and Rocket Lab, where the group discussed removing beyond line-of-sight constraints for communications. “With Maxwell, we’ll be demonstrating a kind of end-to-end service, so we’re moving away from these rigid, constrained windows of communication opportunities, and we’re starting to see this always-on, persistent communication emerge as an available option,” stated Skylar Cox.
