The Giants claimed infielder Brett Harris off waivers from the Red Sox, per a team announcement. He’s been optioned to Triple-A. Harris was designated for assignment on Tuesday to clear a spot for right-hander Jedixson Paez. Righty Keaton Winn was moved to the 60-day IL to open a 40-man spot. Winn’s placement on the 60-day IL makes it a whopping 14 guys on the list for San Francisco.
The Red Sox acquired Harris in a minor trade with the A’s in July. He’d recently been DFAed by the Athletics. Harris appeared in just one game with Boston shortly after the trade. He started at first base and went 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch. He’s spent the majority of the year at Triple-A. Harris has compiled a strong 119 wRC+ across 71 minor league games between the two organizations.
Harris has a .593 OPS in 74 games as a big leaguer. He’d spent his entire pro career with the A’s until this season. The 28-year-old has played every infield position except shortstop during his time in the majors. Harris has played a handful of games at short in the minors.
The main draw for Harris is defensive versatility. He could chip in around the diamond for a San Francisco squad missing Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, Casey Schmitt, and Marcelo Mayer. The club may prefer to give younger options like Nate Furman and Osleivis Basabe additional reps to close the year, unless more injuries force them to bring up Harris.
Winn went down with right elbow neuritis near the end of August. It was his second elbow injury of the season, after he dealt with a strain back in June. Winn was having a solid season at the back-end of San Francisco’s bullpen when he was available. The righty posted a 3.35 ERA across 44 appearances. He leads the team with 14 holds.

If the Giants aquired Andrès Gimimez then we could call him Andrès the giant – that is all.
¡El Gallo!
Say goodbye to Casey Schmitt.
Huh?
Why? This dude is just cover till Casey gets well along with the rest of the injured infied then bye bye Brett Harris.
AAA Backfill.
I believe their 40 man roster is full, which is why they moved Winn to the 60 day IL.
The Giants had 22 pitchers, 4 catchers, 8 infielders and 6 outfielders on the 40 man roster before moving Winn to the 60 day IL. That is, unless they dfa’d a couple of players recently and I missed it (and no, I did not miss Kennedy being dfa’d).
SF has 54 players on the 40-man (including 14 on the 60-day IL)
No, they have only 38 active roster spots filled. 51 guys total, with 13 on the 60-day.
Hey Jean, looking at the 40 man roster on the Giants’ website, I see the following (prior to Winn to 60, Harris added):
Pitchers (21) – Abner, Beck, Bivens, Brubaker, Foley, Harris, Hentges, Lonsway, Marte, Molina, Perdomo, Roupp, Roxby, Sanmartin, Seymour, Smith, Tidwell, Walker, Webb, Wilkinson, Winn
Catchers (4) – Cavanaugh, Knizner, Morgan, Rodriguez
Infielders (8) – Adames, Basabe, Devers, Eldridge, Furman, Koss, Mayer, Whitcomb
Outfielders (6) – Bericoto, Cox, Gilbert, Hill, Lee, McCray
That comes out to 39 but there are rumors that Miguel Mendez was on the 40 man roster with the Padres before their trade and should be listed on the Giants’ 40 man roster as a result but the website never got updated.
So it is possible that there were only 39 but the way the Giants keep using the 60 day IL to add players to the 40 man roster seems to suggest that Mendez is on the 40 man roster, making it full.
My mistake, it is 39. BB Ref had not added Brett Harris when I looked. Mendez is not on the 40 man. But, the 40 man was at 38 when they claimed him, and my point was they didn’t need to move Winn to the 60 day IL. That move was unrelated. And also, that the post from @Ernie Riles, saying the Giants had 54 guys on the 40 man, with 14 on the 60 day, was also in error.
I really do think Miguel Mendez is on the 40 man roster and he is being omitted in error. The Padres added him to their 40 man roster last winter and I cannot find anywhere that either the Padres or Giants outrighted him. The Giants have to add players to their 40 man roster if they acquire those players in a trade unless they immediately designate the player for assignment.

If you look at Miguel Mendez’ MLB player page, you’ll see that his contract was purchased by the Padres on Nov. 18th, 2025, he was optioned by them on March 5th, 2026 and there are no subsequent transactions that show he was removed from any 40 man roster.

And yes, you are correct that players on the 60 day IL do not count toward the 40 man roster.
You might be right about Mendez. He should be on the 40 man. But for some reason he’s not listed on BB ref, nor the Giants page at MLB.com.
Well, I didn’t really say that, nor meant to, and I assume everybody knows that.
I was agreeing on your assessment that Ernie Riles was incorrect to count guys on the 60 day IL toward the 40 man roster.
Someone on a Giants’ forum pointed out that Mendez should be counted and I didn’t believe it either until I saw that he was on the Padres’ 40 man roster. It is odd that the major websites don’t list him. I wonder how that got missed (or his removal got missed).
Sorry, one more article that suggests that Miguel Mendez is on the 40 man roster. This one from MLBTR on the day of the trade. They mention that he and Ray essentially swap 40 man roster spots.
Not trying to further convince, just pulling up another website that suggests he is on the 40 man roster and I’ll leave it alone.

You convinced me a while ago. It’s a mystery why Mendez isn’t listed. You’re probably also correct that Winn was moved to the 60 day to make room for Harris, even though the article stated that that move was unrelated to claiming Harris.
Should be one less after they DFA Walker.
Which can’t come a minute too soon.
Please, I’ve seen enough of Basabe! he can’t hit, has Flubber in his glove and has a Rag Arm! Just let Furman play!!!
I’m done with Whitcomb starting as well. I’d like to see the Giants call up Parks Harber and install him as the starting 3rd baseman for the rest of the season. Play Furman at 2nd the rest of the season and keep Basabe and either Whitcomb or Harris as the backups (or maybe rotate them with Koss at short).
I think they are just filling in with Whitcomb until Mayer is ready.
Basabe will not be in any long term plans either. Not. That. Good.
Unfortunately, Mayer hit a roadblock on his rehab assignment. He may be lucky to play the last week with the Giants this season.
Mayer always hits a roadblock.
Mayer has struggled with staying healthy, but if he gets there I think you could have a solid young infielder. Hopefully he can overcome his ongoing injury challenges and start living up to his potential.
Harber has hit a little wall. 0 for his last 17
He’s fresh to AAA and needs to stay off the 40 man to get more development during impending lockout. No reason to rush him along.
Hasn’t stopped the Giants from calling up many other guys who were fresh in AAA or hadn’t even made it to AAA yet. I get the feeling that don’t really care too much about stashing guys away with the impending lockout.
Niners just landed in your hood Fopp. Show them around if you get a chance. Just don’t get em too juiced past Tuesday.
Ha ha. Have they stopped whinging about the flight yet ?
Yeah. Bit far away from me but I’ll be watching. Should be good. MCG holds 100,000 and it sold out in under 30mins. Bit of a buzz around for sure.
Just hope it doesn’t clash with the Jackson Flora San Jose debut this weekend.
I think they found some keepers.
Cox should start in CF next year.
Hill might be a good 4th OF guy.
I’m hoping Mayer can become the SS with Adames moving to 2B, (unless traded). Schmitt would then be LF.
I think Hill may be good enough to start in LF. I DO wonder where this leaves Bericoto and Davidson.
My hopes for Bo is that he really tears up AAA in 2027. Meanwhile Jung Hu Lee has a decent year too. Lee becomes trade target and Davidson takes his spot.
Not sold on Bericoto.
