Our offices in Mountain View are home to a host of wildlife, thanks in part to our ongoing conservation efforts: monarch butterflies, honeybees, rare birds and more. But in January, the Google campus got one of its most unlikely visitors yet: a six-month-old California sea lion. Later affectionately named Babymac, the wayward pup had somehow wandered far from home and wound up in one of our parking lots. Babymac was quickly rescued with the help of concerned Googlers, our Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) team and the Mountain View police, who kept him safe until responders from The Marine Mammal Center were able to transport him to the center for rehabilitation. He faced a long road to recovery from severe malnutrition and other maladies. Fortunately, Babymac thrived in his treatment at The Marine Mammal Center. After graduating from a special fish smoothie mixture to eating whole herrings on his own, Babymac successfully gained the weight he needed to. In March, he passed a release exam, and was safely returned to the wild in Point Reyes, California. “We are thrilled Babymac made such positive strides in recovery and was able to be released back to his ocean home,” says Dr. Emily Whitmer, a clinical veterinarian at The Marine Mammal Center. As for future visits? “We always enjoy visitors at our offices at Google,” says Robert Ortiz Carlos of GSOC operational support. “But if Babymac decides to visit in the future, he’ll need to be signed in at the kiosk and escorted. Hopefully one trip to the Googleplex is enough for a lifetime.”

Prerit’s path to Security Engineer on the Mandiant Security Validation Consulting team at Google started with a simple curiosity about how things break. While studying, he pivoted from general engineering to the specialized world of cybersecurity. "I took formal security courses and joined the hacking club, which introduced me to Capture the Flag (CTF) and the field of security engineering," he says. That early passion led to a Google internship that moved at lightning speed. "It was my first-ever security job, and within weeks I was supported enough to co-invent a patent," he continues. Today, Prerit spends his day-to-day in the Google New York office keeping our clients safe. "I create and simulate malicious behaviors in controlled settings to see if my attempts are blocked or detected," he explains. "Ultimately, this helps in ensuring that the security systems are robust enough to catch and prevent real-world threats before they cause harm." Prerit’s career advice for students: “Take initiative. Explore the different sub-niches within this vast field so you can find what interests you most. Learning the basics of how something works is the first step towards understanding how it can be hacked.” Interested in a career like Prerit’s? Meet notebooks in the Gemini app. 📓 We’re connecting Gemini with NotebookLM, our AI-powered research partner, to create a home base for your projects that stays in sync across both tools. Think of a notebook like a dedicated project folder for your big ideas and specific tasks. You can even move past chats into notebooks and add files like documents and PDFs for it to reference. Because Gemini draws from your specific sources, its answers are uniquely tailored to help you with the task at hand. The best part? It all stays in sync. You can start a project in Gemini and jump into NotebookLM to use features like Video Overviews or Slide Decks to wrap things up — and vice versa. We're rolling out notebooks in Gemini this week, starting with Google AI Ultra, Pro and Plus subscribers on the web. In the coming weeks we'll expand access to mobile, more countries across Europe and to free users. Learn more → goo.gle/4eadmGA

We’re rolling out two new Google Chrome features to help improve your focus: ↕️ Organize your tabs vertically If you’re like me and prefer working off of a large monitor, vertical tabs are perfect for freeing up some real estate at the top of your screen. Just right-click at the top of any Chrome window and click “Show Tabs Vertically.” This moves your tabs to the side of your browser, so you can read full page titles and manage tab groups with ease — even with lots of tabs open. You can also pin your most important tabs for easy access. 📖 Deepen your focus with full-page reading mode Reading mode now has a full-page interface that reduces visual clutter and turns busy webpages into an immersive, text-focused reading experience. You can also customize fonts, colors, text sizes and more to your liking. And if you’re multitasking, you can listen to articles instead. Personally, I can't imagine browsing without either of these features now. Excited to hear your thoughts once you try them!

Mental health is one of the most significant public health challenges today, impacting over one billion people around the world. For many years, Google has been committed to helping people find high-quality information and crisis support in the moments they need it most. While we realize that AI tools can pose new challenges, we believe that responsible AI can play a positive role for people’s mental well-being. Today, we’re sharing an update on our mental health work, including some new changes to better connect people with the right information, resources, and human support at the right time on the Gemini app, including: -Updates to Gemini to streamline the path to support for those who need it. When a conversation might signal a user may need information about mental health Gemini will surface a redesigned "Help is available" module — developed with clinical experts — to provide more effective and immediate connections to care. -$30 million in Google.org funding globally over the next three years to help global hotlines. This funding will help effectively scale their capacity to provide immediate and safe support for people in crisis. -As people interact with Gemini in deeper, more complex ways, our clinical, engineering and safety teams are helping Gemini respond in acute mental health situations and directing people to real-world help. -New specific protections for minors, designed to provide the most helpful responses and avoid harmful topics when using Gemini. Your inbox is your business. That's why when you ask Gemini in Gmail to summarize a lengthy thread — or do other tasks in your inbox for you — it “clocks in” to complete the task and then leaves your inbox. Gemini in Gmail doesn’t store your info, or use your personal emails to train our foundational AI models. Blake Barnes, our VP of Product at Gmail, explains how this works ⬇️
