This def is big news for Australia’s AI landscape. Sure sparks some exciting possibilities! But also some very important questions too... 🤨 Will development be trackable through GitHub/GitLab so the community can meaningfully engage? 🤨 What trustworthy governance structures are being considered to steward this work? 🤨 The website mentions “ethical data acquisition”. So will this include Indigenous data sovereignty principles and approaches like federated learning architectures? 🌏 And what of ecological footprints? If sovereignty means responsibility, how will energy, water, and material costs be addressed in ways that regenerate rather than deplete? Sovereignty in AI isn’t only about infrastructure and capability, it’s about how we embed fairness, dignity, care, and relational accountability into the design itself. Looking forward to seeing how this evolves but keen to hear other's thoughts on this news. #aiethics #moralimagineering #hospitableplanet
AI in Australia just changed .... forever! I am happy to announce the official launch of Sovereign Australia AI. Dr Troy Neilson joins me as co-founder and CTO. Today, The Australian Financial Review's Tess Bennett covered our launch. Sovereign Australia AI is a new venture building Australia’s largest sovereign AI capability. At the heart of this launch is a record-breaking investment: a massive 256 NVIDIA Blackwell B200 GPUs hosted in NEXTDC's secure Australian data centre in Melbourne, and managed by SHARON AI. This gives our nation the scale to develop homegrown large language models that are transparent, ethical, and built with Australian values at their core. We have also earmarked a huge AU$10m to ensure creatives are made whole for copyrighted materials - that’s Australian! Our mission is simple but powerful: ensure Australians know what goes into the AI models shaping our future and that those models are trained and hosted here, not offshore. We have already signed an MoU with the ACS (Australian Computer Society) to deliver bespoke sovereign AI capability, showing the demand for ethical, sovereign alternatives is very real. This is about more than technology. It’s about trust, transparency, and sovereignty in the AI era. Our website is: https://sovereign-au.ai Special thanks to Craig Scroggie, Andrew Leece, Kieran Habojan, Sudarshan Ramachandran, Rhod Brown, Brett Bonser, Melissa Hamilton and so many more. Excellent provocation, Mathew 💡
Wondering if we really need to introduce more ai into the world right now?! I’m so exhausted by it. You ask some great questions, Mathew!
