  • Last Thursday marked the culmination of 25 years of energy innovation and trusted execution. Held at the iconic Salt Shed in Chicago—and livestreamed to our offices around the world—we celebrated Invenergy's monumental growth and highlighted key moments in our history through speakers from company leadership. Founder and Executive Chairman Michael Polsky, CEO Jim Murphy, and Chief People Officer Mary King, as well as special guest Vice Chairman of S&P Global Daniel Yergin, reflected on the innovation and expertise that shaped the company and shared excitement for how Invenergy can continue to lead the industry to what's next. To all our employees, thank you for helping build our legacy over the last 25 years. We can't wait to see what's in store for the next 25.

  • In 2019, Jessup, Pennsylvania became home to Invenergy's largest operating energy plant: the Lackawanna Energy Center. Beyond its triumphant 1.5-gigawatt scale, Lackawanna holds a special place in Invenergy's history as a masterclass in modern energy efficiency, innovation, and community impact. Planning began as early as 2012, as the retirement of older power plants across PJM created opportunities for new natural gas generation. The initial concept was to develop a 1,370-megawatt facility into the side of a mountain near Scranton, Pennsylvania, using existing Invenergy equipment in storage. But in 2014, when interconnection studies revealed the site could support closer to 1,480 megawatts, Invenergy was prompted to adopt GE's new-to-market 7HA.02 high-efficiency, air-cooled combustion turbines. This industry-leading technology would make Lackawanna an "H" class power plant: one of the most advanced, highly efficient natural gas generation facilities. Collaboration with GE was seamless, but construction brought challenges. Building atop a former coal mine on the side of a mountain required extensive rock excavation and mine-void mitigation before work could begin. The first-of-its-kind design also required phased commissioning, with one unit entering operation while the remaining units were still being completed. The entire process called for extremely careful planning and commissioning from a highly skilled and experienced construction team. "Invenergy's culture of innovation was instrumental in the success of a facility with the latest technology," attests Jason Carey, VP of Operations. Lackawanna became the first GE single-shaft H-class plant to reach commercial operations in the U.S. and remains the leader of GE's single-shaft fleet today. The project earned POWER magazine's Top Plant Award in 2019, while Engineering News-Record recognized EPC partner Kiewit with Best Energy/Industrial and Excellence in Safety. Beyond the plant itself, Lackawanna has funded an annual scholarship through Lackawanna College for the last decade, contributes $1 million each year to Jessup through a community host agreement, and supports local emergency services, educational programs, environmental organizations, and veterans' groups.

20 years ago, Kevin Schroeder, fresh out of college, aspired to make a big difference at a small startup called Invenergy. Today, as SVP of Operations with 20 GW of energy under his purview, his impact at the company – and the energy industry – has been immeasurable. As a college graduate, Kevin launched into Invenergy as a project engineer, helping oversee the construction and commissioning of the company’s fifth U.S. wind project, Victory Wind Energy Center, in his home state of Iowa. Two years later, when Invenergy expanded its own Operations & Maintenance branch (Invenergy Services) to wind farms, Kevin recognized his value in providing technical support for a growing energy portfolio and became the company’s first Operations Engineer. Over the next decade, he grew the operations engineering team from the ground up before being tasked with overseeing renewable site operations and control room operations. In his current role as a senior leader of the company, he oversees site and field operations of Invenergy’s North American clean energy fleet, along with supporting functions such as technician training and ops system applications. Kevin reminisces fondly on his time on the road, with Victory Wind holding a special place in his heart as his first experience with renewable energy and his opportunity to make a meaningful impact in his home state. Accepting the Excellence in Operations award from the American Wind Energy Association in 2017 on behalf of his team was equally gratifying, demonstrating the wild success of their O&M endeavors from a decade prior. “I don’t think I ever envisioned Invenergy becoming as large as it is now,” He reflects. “I remember when our main office consisted of one part of the 19th floor…now we have seven full floors. I remember when our control center consisted of several PCs in a small room at the Camp Springs wind farm in Texas, and now we have 2 state-of-the-art control centers staffed 24/7…what hasn’t changed is that desire to keep pushing the envelope. To be nimble. To find innovative solutions for our customers. To grow and expand the business.” When reflecting on the enormous opportunity the energy industry is seeing today, Kevin looks forward to the challenge: "If there is any company in the industry that can pull it off, it is Invenergy and the amazing people that work here." Thank you, Kevin, for your decades of contributions to safe, reliable energy operations. 📸 Pictured: Kevin stands on top of a wind turbine at Victory Wind, 2006. 📸 Pictured: Kevin holds his employee badge, which still displays the picture taken on his first day at Invenergy, 2026.
