  • [EXTENDED DEADLINE] Researchers, come and use our labs! Our Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Laboratory offers a broad range of testing capabilities, including in the field of satellite navigation, wireless communications, satellite communications and EU Radio Spectrum Policy.   You can now apply to come and use its facilities and expertise for your research projects on the testing of spaceborne receivers, with a focus on exploiting Galileo signals and related services in space.    Example topics covered by the open call:  ➡️Galileo High‑Accuracy Service (HAS).    ➡️Precise On‑board Orbit Determination (P2OD).    ➡️Timing‑critical applications.    ➡️Autonomous navigation under attitude manoeuvres.    ➡️High‑sensitivity techniques.  ⏰ Deadline for proposals: 30 November 2026    Learn more and apply: https://lnkd.in/e2ff5Frj

  • What if satellites could be repaired, upgraded and given new capabilities while still in orbit? Researchers have built and tested a universal interface that could allow servicing spacecraft to connect equipment from different satellite systems. That could help satellites last longer, reduce the need for costly replacements and lower the risk of space debris. ➡️ link.europa.eu/PP4JGW #ResearchImpactEU #Science4EU EU Space European Space Agency - ESA

  • Researchers are increasingly using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) for their work.  With technology evolving fast, practical and trusted guidance is more important than ever to navigate opportunities and risks confidently and responsibly. To support researchers and funding organisations, we just updated the Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research, reflecting new developments.  The updated Guidelines address:  🔹Agentic AI systems acting with greater autonomy on more complex tasks. Addressing this is important for oversight, accountability and reliability.   🔹The use of AI in peer review and proposal evaluation. This requires particular attention in relation to fairness, transparency, confidentiality and scientific integrity. As part of the activities of the European Research Area, and especially the action on AI in Science, the Guidelines are updated regularly with the community. This helps ensure that their guidance remains relevant and reflects the reality of research practice. Find the updated Guidelines here 👉 link.europa.eu/BQpPvg

  • How does the time you spend on social media affect your wellbeing?   Meet Romina, one of our scientists working on the societal implications of digital transformation.   Her team explores how digital transformation is shaping our society. Their work helps build the evidence needed to protect and equip European citizens with the knowledge and digital skills they need for the future.   They have also analysed the different dimensions of cyberbullying, providing independent scientific evidence and advice to support the European Action Plan on cyberbullying.   🎥 Hear more about Romina’s work EU Digital & Tech

  • The European Commission has launched the RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) pledging initiative for AI in science enablers today at the European AI in Science Summit in Dublin.     This is a concrete commitment under the AI in Science Strategy and aims to deepen collaboration between Europe’s scientific community and industry, connecting scientific excellence with AI technological expertise and resources.     Through the new pledging initiative, industry and philanthropic organisations will provide in-kind support such as: - access to frontier AI models  - computing capacity  - research software licences  - data  - training  - other key resources needed to accelerate scientific discovery with AI     First contributions have already been pledged by Novo Nordisk Foundation, NVIDIA, Elsevier, Sanofi, Frontiers, Mistral, and Google DeepMind. The initiative remains open to further contributions as we work together to boost AI-enabled research and innovation across Europe. 🔗 link.europa.eu/K6Hkh4

  • Rural Europe is not an innovation desert. It just innovates differently, and requires the right support to thrive. The European Startups Village Forum brings together experts, innovators, and policymakers to discuss rural innovation and how local, regional and EU initiatives can fuel rural innovation and competitiveness, while ensuring the right to stay for rural communities. • That’s a wrap for this year’s European Week of Regions!   Over two days, we hosted several sessions and an event as part of the Close to You programme. It was a great opportunity to showcase our work on territorial development and cohesion policy, and to explore some of the key challenges facing EU regions today.   One of our key areas of focus is demographic change and the “right to stay”.   Our research highlights the scale of the challenge Europe is facing: by 2045, more than half of the EU population will live in a shrinking region. Regional development policies will need to adapt to population decline while ensuring a high quality of life for people in both growing and shrinking areas.   But our work on territorial policies goes beyond this, covering topics such as women’s contributions to regional prosperity, place-based innovation for water resilience, and more.   A big thank you to everyone who joined our sessions, shared their perspectives and contributed to the discussions!   Until next year!

  • The share of firms using AI in EU strategic sectors grew from 7% in 2021 to 18% in 2025. We just published a new analysis on AI uptake and barriers to use in the strategic sectors, covered by the Apply AI strategy. Our main findings: - The sectors with the highest AI use are media, energy and electronic, while mobility, tourism and agri-food lag behind. - The growth of AI use is mainly driven by LLMs as they have become cheaper and more accessible. - Capital-intensive industries, requiring sophisticated computing infrastructure, have higher AI uptake than labour-intensive sectors, based on people and skills. • From flashfloods and wildfires to low river flows, understanding where hazards occur and what may be exposed is an essential part of reducing disaster risk.  Today is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and a great moment to reflect on the importance of strengthening resilience before disasters happen. The Copernicus Emergency Management Service, implemented by the Joint Research Centre helps the EU do precisely that. The Service provides geospatial information which can support preparedness and risk reduction across different types of hazards, such as mapping areas prone to flashfloods, assessing wildfire damage, and monitoring low-flow river conditions. By combining information on where events are likely to occur, which areas are exposed and how environmental conditions are changing, Copernicus helps authorities better understand risk and supports informed planning.
