Nearly 874,000 people in #Somalia could be forced from their homes by flooding over the next three months. For communities already struggling with drought and repeated displacement, the threat of rising floodwaters puts homes, livelihoods and access to essential services at further risk. New projections from IOM and the Danish Refugee Council estimate that flooding could account for 92% of displacement between October and December. IOM is working alongside Somali authorities and local communities to strengthen early warning systems, identify safer evacuation routes and prepare emergency assistance. Urgent international support is needed to protect communities, safeguard livelihoods and reduce the impact of the anticipated floods. Read more: https://ow.ly/R8St50ZZGOu
IOM - UN Migration
Internationale Angelegenheiten
Promoting safe, regular and dignified migration since 1951.
Info
Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. IOM works with its partners in the international community to assist in meeting the growing operational challenges of migration, advance understanding of migration issues, encourage social and economic development through migration and uphold the well-being and human rights of migrants. More people are on the move today than at any other time in recorded history: 1 billion people – comprising a seventh of humanity. A variety of elements – not least the information and communications revolutions – contribute to the movement of people on such a large scale. The forces driving migration as a priority issue are: climate change, natural and manmade catastrophes, conflict, the demographic trends of an ageing industrialized population, an exponentially expanding jobless youth population in the developing world and widening North–South social and economic disparities.

At #PreCOP31 in Fiji, she and other young Tuvaluans used performance and storytelling to share their lived experiences and call for urgent action. Their message is clear: actions matter more than words.

Winter is approaching in Ukraine, where damaged homes, attacks on energy infrastructure and unaffordable heating costs risk forcing families to leave again. Electricity, heating and water systems are under growing pressure, while continued attacks are making everyday life increasingly dangerous for communities across the country. Meanwhile, an estimated 1.4 to 1.5 million returnees are living in frontline districts, and for 2.1 million internally displaced people, returning home remains impossible because their homes are damaged, destroyed or in an unknown condition. At today's UN briefing in Geneva, IOM called for urgent support to repair damaged homes, improve insulation and maintain essential services.

Ukrainians who returned home after fleeing war risk being displaced again this winter. Latest IOM findings show recent returnees are likely to consider leaving again, as damaged housing, attacks on energy infrastructure and rising heating costs make it harder for families to stay. Less than 7 per cent of IOM's Ukraine Crisis Response Plan for 2026 has been funded. Urgent support is needed to help communities withstand the months ahead. Read more: https://lnkd.in/geyuj79Q
