In Uzbekistan’s Syrdarya region, student Saidbek built a four-wheel-drive SmartCar and programmed it using digital tools. Today, Saidbek is exploring robotics and coding through practical projects in his school’s STEM classroom, supported by the new Tinkering with Tech programme. “Before, we didn't have these opportunities. Now we do,” he says. His experience shows how connectivity can open up opportunities for learning, creativity, and digital skills development. What do internet searches, electricity use and air traffic have to do with protecting migrant and displaced children? More than you might think.    Data generated through seemingly unrelated aspects of daily life – such as changes in electricity use, air traffic or online searches – can reveal shifts in human mobility. Researchers are using this data to better understand the situation of children on the move – those who have migrated or been displaced, including refugees, asylum-seeking children and those travelling alone.  This type of approach is especially important because data on children's mobility is often limited. By filling critical information gaps, with an ethical and responsible approach, these insights can help decision-makers take action to better protect migrant and displaced children. To find out more about the power of innovative technologies to strengthen evidence on children on the move, explore this new report from the UNICEF-led IDAC - International Data Alliance for Children on the Move, developed with support from the European Commission and AGENCIA ESPAÑOLA DE COOPERACION INTERNACIONAL PARA EL DESARROLLO - AECID: https://lnkd.in/g-iY723j

“I want my baby to grow healthy and strong… and become a nurse in the future.” For Alice Zainab Bangura, registering her newborn daughter’s birth began with a visit to the community health centre for vaccinations. Just three days after giving birth, she left with something more: the assurance that her daughter’s identity had been officially recorded. Using a small portable device, registrars recorded Ishiatu’s birth on the spot and gave her a unique National Identification Number. That record will help her enrol in school, access health care and claim her rights as she grows. With support from the Luxembourg Government Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade and Co-Develop, UNICEF is working with the Government of Sierra Leone to build digital systems that are inclusive, secure and designed to protect children’s data and rights. Discover how digital innovation can help build a brighter future for every child. Uzbekistan is expanding school connectivity nationwide, creating new opportunities for learning and innovation and strengthening the foundations for an AI-ready education system. In 2021, the Government of Uzbekistan shared national school connectivity data with Giga, laying the groundwork for collaboration on improving connectivity data and real-time monitoring. Today, GigaMeter provides real-time data on internet connectivity from more than 10,000 schools, giving decision-makers greater visibility into internet performance and supporting more informed planning and investment. Our launch event was even more meaningful than we could've imagined. 🎉 Last Wednesday, we launched IAEF alongside our co-hosts United Nations Human Rights and UNICEF and a room full of advocates, researchers and global leaders, all asking the same question: who decides which AI tools are safe and credible? The conversation was powerful, but a few moments from our speakers really stayed with us: 📍 Megan Garcia, Esq., reminded us all that "AI safety" is never just an abstract concept—it’s about real children and real families. She shared her deeply moving journey of turning the unimaginable loss of her son into fierce advocacy for child safety in the AI era. 📍 John Pasmore, founder of Latimer.AI and an IAEF partner, talked about how fatherhood drove him to build a culturally grounded alternative to mainstream AI—a platform that is now empowering students across HBCUs. 📍California State Senator Jerry McNerney, author of the nation's first legislation to establish independent AI evaluation (SB 813), issued a bold call to action: "I am challenging the tech companies and the governor to create independent standard committees." To everyone who showed up and cheered us on: thank you. This is just the beginning — and we're so glad you're with us. 💙 If you missed our launch, you can watch the full conversation here : https://lnkd.in/gR-7RCGF #AIGovernance #ResponsibleAI #AIEvaluation
