🌍 On this #InternationalDayOfTheGirl, two recent #evaluations from Benin and Northern Nigeria help illuminate what it takes to turn girls' potential into opportunity: supportive communities, positive role models, quality learning and the confidence to pursue their ambitions. Evidence from these two countries shows that lasting change for girls happens when schools, families and communities work together to remove barriers and expand opportunities.
✨ What the evaluations show:
✅ In Northern Nigeria, Girls for Girls (G4G) clubs, High-Level Women Advocates (HiLWA), Mothers' Associations and community engagement approaches helped strengthen girls' confidence, aspirations, leadership and participation in education. The evaluation found significant improvements in girls' enrolment, retention and learning outcomes, alongside positive shifts in community attitudes towards girls' education.
✅ In Benin, community mobilization, engagement of school management committees, provision of learning materials, school meals and gender-responsive support contributed to improved enrolment, progression and completion for girls. The evaluation also highlighted the importance of addressing barriers such as child marriage, early pregnancy and restrictive social norms through sustained community action and support.
💡 Across both #evaluations, one message stands out: girls thrive when education goes beyond the classroom. Mentoring, women's leadership, parental engagement, life skills, safe learning environments and communities that actively support girls' aspirations are critical ingredients for success.
