Transforming inpatient mental health units with extraordinary contemporary art, with creativity, colour and kindness.

About us

Artist Tim A Shaw and curator Niamh White founded Hospital Rooms after a close friend was admitted to a mental health hospital. On visiting her, they were shocked to find the hospital environment was cold and clinical at a time when she was so vulnerable. Having worked in the arts for 10 years each, they felt they had the skills and community to be able to transform these spaces with high-quality artworks. In 2016, Dr Emma Whicher gave them the opportunity to run their first project at the Phoenix Unit, a rehabilitation unit for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. They commissioned Nick Knight, Gavin Turk, and Assemble, among other world-class artists, to work with patients and staff to create site-specific artwork for the ward. The project received national press attention and Hospital Rooms has been inundated with requests for projects ever since.

If our surroundings affect how we feel, think and recover, why do we design so few of them with that in mind? We spend huge amounts of energy on medicine and technology to improve health, and comparatively little on the actual spaces people heal in. At Future Forum this October, Niamh White MBE, Co-Founder and CEO of Hospital Rooms, shares what happens when world-class artists enter the UK's toughest mental health settings. Through a highly visual session, she makes the case for treating a room as part of someone's care. Can a Room Change How You Feel? Catch this session on 14 October, 15:45–16:05, at Network Central, part of Future Forum's flagship event running 13–15 October in King's Cross. Passes are available now, link in the comments. #FutureForum #LeaveYourLane

  • Last week we celebrated the opening of The Kingfisher, a new NHS inpatient service in Fishponds, Bristol, supporting autistic adults and adults with learning disabilities who are experiencing serious mental health challenges. We were joined by The Kingfisher Clinical Team for guided tours of the 13 artworks we commissioned for the service, alongside reflections from the project team and partners. The service was developed in collaboration with lived experience advisors, who also helped shape the artworks. Artists worked with patients, NHS staff and people with lived experience of mental health services to create works that respond to the sensory needs of the people receiving care here. Together, these works bring imagination, calm, creativity and hope into the space. The project features artwork by Peter Adjaye, Rubbena Aurangzeb-Tariq, Hannah Brown, Victoria Cantons, Dhaqan Collective, Christopher Hartmann, Mohammed Imran Khan (ActionSpace), Louise Morgan (AIM), Julian Opie, Phil Root, Chris Rose (AIM), Veronica Ryan and Boo Saville. Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate with us, and to our partners ActionSpace, Arnolfini, Art in Motion and Spike Island for making this project possible. #HospitalRooms #ArtsAndHealth #MentalHealth #NHS #Bristol #ContemporaryArt #LearningDisabilities #Autism

Thank you to everyone who came along, and to everyone who has supported us over these past 10 years. Photography © Hannah Goldsmith #HospitalRooms #10Years #ArtAndMentalHealth
